Sweden is home to some of the most competitive and respected clubs on the European continent.

Despite the fact that the level of competition in this Nordic country is lower in comparison to other nations, Swedish clubs are still able to do well for themselves.

There are quite a number of top clubs in this Northern European country.

Today, we will take a look at the top football clubs in Sweden.

1. IFK Goteborg

IFK Goteborg

Goteborg was founded 117 years ago on 4th, October 1904. Blavitt plays in the Swedish city bearing the same name Gothenburg.

They currently compete in the Allsvenskan the top flight league in Sweden which they have won 13 times.

In total, they have been crowned Swedish champions 18 times.

IFK has the pride of being the only Nordic club to have won a European club competition, following their triumph in the UEFA Cup now Europa League in the 1981-1982 and 1986-1987 season.

They play in a blue striped jersey.

2. Malmo FF

Malmo FF top football clubs in Sweden

MFF was established in the city bearing its name on the 24th of February 1910.

Di blae is one of the most dominant club sides in the country, having won the league a record 21 times and the national cup 14 times.

Malmo is the only Nordic club that has reached the finals of the European Cup, the precursor to the UEFA Champions League.

They got to the finals in 1979 but lost 1-0 to winners Nottingham Forest. They are currently playing in the group stages of this year’s Champions League.

Malmö FF are also the only Nordic football club to have played at the Intercontinental Cup (now known as the FIFA Club World Cup) where they competed for the 1979 title.

3. Hammarby IF

Bajen is one of the oldest clubs in the land having been founded in 1897. Hammerby is based in the Swedish capital Stockholm.

They have won the league and national cup only once respectively in their history and have participated in various European club competitions.

Hammarby are partly owned by Swedish football star Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

4. Helsingborgs IF

Helsingborg is another one of the most popular clubs in Sweden. Di Roe was founded on the 4th, of June 1907.

They have won the Swedish domestic championship 7 times in their history, and the National Cup 5 times.

They play in a red shirt on blue shorts, red socks kit.

5. AIK

This grand old club of Swedish football was established on February 15th, 1891. Gnaget has been Swedish champions 12 times and have also won the National Cup 8 times in their history.

AIK currently plays in the Friends Arena in Solna, Stockholm.
