Cristiano Ronaldo is CR7, Adriano is L’imperatore, Ronaldo de Assis Moreira is Ronaldinho, and Givanildo Vieira de Souza, is simply known as Hulk.

Some nicknames are personal choices of the players, while others were bestowed upon a player by their siblings, managers or supporters.

He was named after the American inventor Thomas Edison. His parents decided to remove the “i” and call him “Edson.”

He received the nickname “Pelé” during his school days after mispronouncing the name of his favorite player, Vasco da Gama goalkeeper Bilé

In his autobiography released in 2006, Pele stated he had no idea what the name meant, nor did his old friends — and the word has no meaning in Portuguese either! 

During his international career, the Brazilian legend won three FIFA World Cups: 1958, 1962, and 1970. He was the only player to do so and the youngest player to win a World Cup (17 years old).
