After a rollercoaster season, the 2021/22 Spanish La Liga season finished with Real Madrid reclaiming the title from Atletico Madrid, winning it for a record 35th time. Also, Levante, Alaves, and Granada were the teams that got relegated, while Almería, Real Valladolid, and Girona secured are the newly-promoted La Liga teams for the 2022/23 season.

The Spanish La Liga is a 20-team league that relegates three teams that finish at the bottom of the log at the end of every campaign. The relegated teams are replaced every season with teams from the Spanish second tier, the Segunda division.

The 2022/23 La Liga will be the 92nd edition of the Spanish top football division. It will commence on the 12th of August 2022 and will end in May 2022.

This article will introduce you to the newly-promoted teams who will participate in this season’s 2022/2023 La Liga campaign — Almeria, Athletico Valladolid, and Girona.

UD Almeria

UD Almeria newly-promoted La Liga clubs for the 2022/23 season

The Andalusian-based club booked their ticket back to the Spanish top tier after an impressive campaign in the lower Segunda division. La Union was able to amass 81 points over 42 games to emerge Segunda champions and automatically gain promotion to the La Liga.

Rojiblancos return to participate in next season’s 2022/2023 La Liga campaign after an 8-year absence.

The club was established in 1989 (32 years ago) and secured its first promotion to the top division in 2007/08. They finished in eighth position (their Best-Ever finish) that season under the tutelage of Unai Emery. 

UD Almeria is owned by Saudi Arabian billionaire Turki Al-Sheikh, and their current manager is Rubi.

Coach Juan Sicilia, otherwise known as Rubi, will be hoping will his charges can repeat the impressive form that saw them win the league in the Spanish top flight, which could go a long way in determining their league status at the end of the campaign.

Rubi will be counting on Nigerian international Sadiq Umar, whose goals and assists helped propel them to victory in the League.

Real Valladolid 

Real Valladolid newly-promoted La Liga teams for the 2022/23

The White and Violets will be making a return to the Spanish top flight after a brief season absence following their relegation from La Liga in the 2020/2021 campaign.

Valladolid was able to gain automatic promotion after finishing 2nd in the Segunda division. The Pucele l Pucelanos was able to amass 81 points in 42 games over the course of the season. 

They finished 2nd in the Segunda División and lost out to champions, Almería, on the last day of the season on goal difference because both teams finished with the same points.

The club is based in the city of Valladolid, Castile & León, Spain. Real Valladolid was established in 1928 and made its La Liga debut in 1948/49, becoming the first club from Castile and León to play in La Liga.

Real Valladolid’s best La Liga finish was the fourth position in 1962/63 season. Historically, Valladolid are the 13th-best football team in Spain by overall league points.

The 94-year-old club will be hoping to make their stint in La Liga this time more successful. Coach Jose Martin, aka Pacheta, will be aiming to guarantee their league status at the end of the campaign.

Valladolid is owned by Brazilian legend and 2-time world cup winner Ronaldo de Lima.

Girona FC

Girona FC newly-promoted La Liga clubs for the 2022/23 season

Girona are back in the big leagues after successfully gaining promotion to the Spanish La Liga. Girona achieved this feat by beating Tenerife 3–1 in the Segunda play-off final. They return to the Spanish top flight after a 3-year absence.

During the course of the regular season, they were able to finish in the 6th position, which qualified them for the play-offs. The 91-year-old club will be hoping to have a great 2022/2023 La Liga campaign that will see them avoid relegation.

They are also known as “Blanquivermells” (White and Reds) and play their home games at the 11,810 capacity Estadi Montilivi Stadium.

After their formation in 1930, Girona gained promotion to La Liga in 2016/17 for the first time in their history. However, at the end of the 2018/19 La Liga season, Girona got relegated from La Liga, ending their 2-year spell in the top division.

Nonetheless, after 3 seasons in the 2nd division, the Catalan club have secured promotion back to the top flight after winning the 2021/22 promotion play-offs.

Girona are owned by various shareholders, which include City Football Group (47% share) — owners of Manchester City and New York City FC, Marcelo Claure (35%), and Girona Football Group (16%). The current manager of Girona is Míchel.
