The 84th edition of the French Ligue 1 season ended with a lot of interesting results. At the end of the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season, PSG lifted a record-equalling 10th title with four matches to spare, and Marseille finished second, while Monaco, Rennes, and Nice occupied the European spots. Meanwhile, Saint-Etienne, Metz, and Bordeaux were the clubs that suffered relegation. However, for the upcoming season, Toulouse, Ajaccio, and Auxerre are the newly promoted teams for the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season.
The 2022/23 Ligue 1 season will be the 85th edition of France’s top-flight club football competition. It will commence on the 6th of August 2022 and will end on the 4th of June 2023.

Toulouse FC
Les Violets marked their return to the French top flight after winning the 2021/2022 Ligue 2 championship. Toulouse finished 1st on the log after garnering 79 points from 38 games played throughout the season.
This automatically promoted them back to Ligue 1 after a 2-year absence. The first task ahead for head coach Philippe Montanier would be to maintain their top league status and avoid getting relegated to the French lower tier.
Toulouse had their highest finish in Ligue 1 in 2006/07 when they finished in 3rd place and earned a place in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds, where they lost to Liverpool.
Le Tefece will also be hoping to fight for European club places and maybe snatch an unlikely qualifying place as they did in the 2008/2009 season when they, surprisingly against all odds, qualified for the UEFA Champions League.
AC Ajaccio
The Bears return to the summit of the French football league after an 8-year absence. The Corsican club gained promotion to the French Ligue 1 after finishing second in Ligue 2.
Ajaccio amassed 75 points from 38 games played throughout the course of the campaign to finish second in the log and gain automatic promotion to Ligue 1.
This is a massive achievement for the Olivier Pantaloni-led side, who have had to fight their way up after coming close to getting promoted on a couple of occasions. L’our will be hoping to make a big impact in the upcoming 2022/2023 and avoid relegation.
Ajaccio are the first Corsican club to play in the French top tier, a feat they achieved in 1967.
AJ Auxerre
One of the most well-known French clubs from yesteryear is making a welcome return to the top flight after a 10-year absence from Ligue 1.
The 116-year-old club achieved this after winning the playoffs for the remaining promotion spot into the French top flight. AJA had initially finished 3rd in Ligue 2 after amassing 74 points from 38 matches played.
Auxerre faced off against Saint-Etienne, who had finished 18th in the Ligue 1 2021/2022 campaign. The then Ligue 2 side was able to beat Etienne on penalties in the playoff finals and gain promotion to the top French league.
Head coach Jean-Marc Furlan will be relishing the challenge of carrying over the impressive performances of last season into the new league campaign, which should hopefully see them avoid the drop and give them the platform to establish themselves as a top Ligue 1 side.
Auxerre made its Ligue 1 debut in the 1980/81 season and regularly featured in the top flight until they got relegated 32 years later in the 2011/12 season.
The club has won the Ligue 1 title once in the 1995/96 season.
