The 7-time African Cup of Nations winners have produced incredibly gifted footballers over the years. These Egyptian footballers have set records, won trophies, and produced incredible moments in their career. Here are the five greatest Egyptian footballers of all time.

1. Mohamed Aboutrika

The ex-Egyptian international is arguably the best midfielder the North African country has ever produced. Aboutrika was renowned for his creative ability and knack for scoring important goals. He was part of the Egyptian national team that achieved a historic treble of AFCON titles in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Mohamed won an impressive 100 caps playing for Egypt in a career that spanned from 2001 to 2013, with 38 goals to his name. The mercurial attacking midfielder was also a legend at Egyptian club side Al Ahly, with whom he won numerous domestic titles and 5 CAF Champions League trophies. He was named BBC African footballer of the year in 2008 and was named the Egyptian player of the year four times in a row between 2005-2008. Mohammed Aboutrika is also one of the most underrated African footballers of all time.

2. Hossam Hassan

The legendary striker is regarded as one of Egypt’s greatest goal scorers. Hossam featured for the senior national team an impressive 176 times, between 1985-2006. He is also his country’s highest goal scorer with 68 goals to his name. Hassan played the bulk of his club career in Egypt featuring prominently for Al Ahly. There he won a lot of domestic trophies and continental cups. Hossam Hassan is one of the most decorated football players, and is also the third most capped player in men’s international football.

3. Ahmed Hassan

Hassan is the record cap holder for the Egyptian national team with 184 appearances for the Pharaohs between 1995-2012. The midfield general was known for his passing range and technical ability on the ball. Ahmed also scored his fair share of goals with 33 to his name. He featured for a few European clubs, but like most Egyptian players played a lot in the domestic league. He was the captain of the legendary Egyptian side that won 3 back-to-back AFCON titles.

So far, he has featured 80 times for the Pharaohs and has scored 47 goals and counting. He was named African footballer of the year in 2017 and 2018. Mo Salah is currently vying for the 2021 AFCON trophy, and is well on his way to becoming a true African football legend.

5. Essam El-Hadary

The former Egyptian goalkeeper is regarded as one of their greatest players in history. El-Hadary was part of the famous Egyptian side that was so dominant from the mid to late 2000s. He was revered for his shot-stopping skills and calmness in front of goal. In 2018 Essam played in Egypt’s last group match against Saudi Arabia at the FIFA World Cup, officially making him the oldest player to have featured in the tournament at the age of 45 years, 161 days.
