Belgium’s so-called Golden Generation is at its final frontier.

The most talented group of players the country has ever produced came agonisingly close to winning something, finishing third at the 2018 World Cup before a painful group-stage exit in Qatar 2022 that still stings.

Now, at the 2026 World Cup in North America, Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, Thibaut Courtois, and Axel Witsel head into their fourth and almost certainly final World Cup together.

This is Belgium’s 15th World Cup appearance, and according to beIN Sports, no European team has ever qualified for as many World Cup tournaments without winning the trophy.

Under French coach Rudi Garcia, Belgium enter the tournament ranked ninth in the world and drawn in Group G alongside Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand.

    The group is very winnable.

What happens in the knockout rounds is the question Belgium have never been able to answer.

Here are the 10 best soccer players in Belgium at the 2026 World Cup.

    1. Kevin De Bruyne — Midfielder

Age: 34 | Club: Napoli (Italy)

The most gifted midfielder of his generation and the player around whom Belgium’s entire tournament is built.

De Bruyne left Manchester City as a free agent in the summer of 2025 and signed for Napoli on a two-year deal — a romantic, unexpected move to a club and city that embraced him immediately.

He suffered a serious hamstring injury in October 2025 after scoring a penalty against Inter, was sidelined for nearly five months from end of October to early March, and missed 30 matches across all competitions.

But he returned, finished the season with 5 goals and 4 assists in 21 Napoli appearances, and confirmed his fitness in the weeks leading up to the tournament.

“I hope to be in my best shape as soon as possible,” he told reporters.

He has 119 caps and 37 international goals and is Belgium’s joint all-time top assister at the World Cup with four, level with Eden Hazard.

At 34 and heading into his fourth and final World Cup, this is the last chapter of one of the greatest individual international careers European football has produced.

    2. Romelu Lukaku — Forward

Age: 33 | Club: Napoli (Italy)

Belgium’s all-time leading scorer with 90 international goals in 126 caps and a player whose very selection is one of the gambles of the entire tournament.

Lukaku has been in Belgium for the last two months rehabilitating from a hip injury after an almost completely lost season at Napoli, where he made just seven substitute appearances and scored one goal.

He has not started a competitive match for Napoli all season and has not played for Belgium in almost a year.

Garcia’s decision to include him was bold and loaded with risk, telling the media simply: “Lukaku is irreplaceable.”

He is Belgium’s joint-top scorer in World Cup history with five goals, level with Marc Wilmots.

If he finds form and fitness in North America, Belgium become genuine contenders to go all the way.

If he does not, the pressure on De Bruyne to carry this team will be enormous.

    3. Thibaut Courtois — Goalkeeper

Age: 34 | Club: Real Madrid (Spain)

One of the greatest goalkeepers in football history and Belgium’s undisputed number one for over a decade.

Courtois won the Champions League with Real Madrid and is regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world at his peak, earning the FIFA Best Men’s Goalkeeper award in 2023 after his extraordinary performance in the Champions League final against Liverpool that year.

He missed eight Real Madrid matches between March and April due to a muscle injury in 2025/26 but recovered in time to play in the El Clásico before the World Cup.

He has 109 caps and is heading into his fourth World Cup, bringing an authority and presence in goal that no other Belgian goalkeeper has come close to matching.

    4. Jérémy Doku — Forward

Age: 24 | Club: Manchester City (England)

The most explosive wide forward in Belgian football and one of the most frightening dribblers in the Premier League.

Doku produced 21 goal contributions in 50 appearances across all competitions for Manchester City in 2025/26, establishing himself as one of the most direct and dangerous wide players in English football.

His burst of acceleration is exceptional and he is one of those rare players who can make a full-back look completely helpless in a one-on-one situation.

He has 43 caps and 7 international goals and gives Belgium a match-winning threat from the left flank that no other player in the squad can provide.

At 24, he is Belgium’s most exciting attack-minded player, and dribbler, as well as the one who could define this World Cup run for the Red Devils.

    5. Youri Tielemans — Midfielder (Captain)

Age: 29 | Club: Aston Villa (England)

The captain of Belgium and a midfielder who lifted the UEFA Europa League with Aston Villa as recently as 2024.

Tielemans has 85 caps and 13 international goals and brings the kind of technical quality, passing range, and leadership that makes him the perfect captain for a team built around aging superstars.

He and Amadou Onana replicate their Aston Villa club partnership at international level, giving Garcia a midfield that combines technical precision with physical power in a very natural way.

    6. Amadou Onana — Midfielder

Age: 24 | Club: Aston Villa (England)

One of the most powerful and imposing defensive midfielders in the Premier League and the player who provides the physical foundation for Belgium’s midfield to function.

Onana has 29 caps and gives Belgium a presence in the middle of the park that allows De Bruyne, Tielemans, and the forwards ahead of him to play with greater freedom.

He is aggressive in the challenge, dominant in the air, and excellent at winning the ball back and releasing it quickly.

At 24 and heading to his second World Cup, Onana is a genuine world-class talent at his position and one of the most important players in this Belgium squad.

    7. Axel Witsel — Midfielder

(Photo by Grzegorz Wajda/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)

Age: 37 | Club: Girona (Spain)

The most capped player in the squad with 138 appearances and the only member of this group who has attended four consecutive World Cups.

Witsel is a veteran of the Belgian football landscape and brings a composure, experience, and game management quality that cannot be taught.

At 37, his legs are not what they were, but his reading of the game and his ability to organise the midfield in the most pressured situations remains valuable.

He is the elder statesman of this squad and one of the last survivors of a Belgian golden generation that changed how the world perceived football from a small nation.

    8. Charles De Ketelaere — Forward

Age: 25 | Club: Atalanta (Italy)

One of the most technically gifted and creatively inventive forwards in Belgian football and a player who has found his best form after a difficult spell at AC Milan.

De Ketelaere joined Atalanta on loan from Milan and was so outstanding in Serie A that the Italian club made the deal permanent, with his performances earning him a reputation as one of the most exciting attacking midfielders in European football.

He has 30 caps and 6 international goals and gives Belgium a different attacking option behind the striker — technical, unpredictable, and capable of creating chances in tight spaces.

    9. Leandro Trossard — Forward

Age: 31 | Club: Arsenal (England)

One of Belgium’s most experienced and dependable wide forwards and a player who has been a consistent contributor at Arsenal for several seasons.

Trossard has 51 caps and 12 international goals and brings composure, technical quality, and goal-scoring efficiency from wide positions.

He is a reliable, professional performer who contributes in every game without dominating headlines, which is exactly the type of player a squad with Belgium’s star power needs in its supporting cast.

He won the Premier League title with Arsenal in 2025/26 and arrives at this World Cup in excellent personal form.

    10. Zeno Debast — Defender

Age: 22 | Club: Sporting CP (Portugal)

The most exciting young defender in Belgian football and the player who represents the country’s future in the backline.

Debast has 26 caps at just 22 years old and has established himself as one of the most consistent and composed centre-backs at Sporting CP, where he has been a key figure in their Champions League campaigns.

He is intelligent, aggressive in the challenge, and excellent in possession — a modern centre-back who fits perfectly into the high-defensive lines demanded by top European clubs.

At 22, this is his second World Cup and the tournament where he could firmly establish himself as one of the best defenders of his generation.

    Belgium’s Last Dance with Greatness

This is it for Belgium’s Golden Generation.

De Bruyne, Lukaku, Courtois, and Witsel are all heading into their fourth and final World Cup, and the window for this group to finally win something is closing for the last time.

The group is kind, the talent is still there, and the experience of tournament football across this squad is unmatched.

But Belgium’s history at World Cups is a story of getting close and falling short, and the pressure to finally deliver something meaningful hangs over every player in this group.

If Lukaku can rediscover his fitness, if De Bruyne can perform at the level he reached in qualifying, and if Doku can unlock defences at his explosive best, Belgium have the tools to go very deep into this tournament.

One last shot at glory for a generation that deserved more.
