Top 5 Soccer Clubs In Canada

The popularity of soccer in Canada has grown immensely, especially after they qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Their success and soccer’s popularity is partly due to the Canadian Premier League, where the top soccer clubs in Canada compete.

The Canadian Premier League (CPL or CanPL) is the top-tier division of the Canadian soccer league system and the country’s main national soccer league competition.

In the league, eight teams from five of Canada’s ten provinces compete by playing 28 games in the regular season, which is followed by playoffs culminating in the CPL Finals. The champions of the CPL earn a place in the CONCACAF League. 

Three Canadian soccer clubs compete in the Major League Soccer in the United States. 

Although some of the soccer clubs in Canada play in the MLS, they are still Canadian clubs and have some pedigree.

1. Toronto FC

The Reds are a Canadian franchise that plays in the American Major League Soccer competition, and they play out of the Eastern Conference. The Toronto-based club was founded in October 2005 and is the first Canadian club side to compete in the MLS since 2007. 

In their 16-year history, Toronto has won the MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield once each. They have also won the Canadian Championship 7 times. Their home stadium is the BMO field in Toronto, Ontario. FC Toronto signed Napoli legend Lorenzo Insigne.

2. CF Montréal 

Montréal is another MLS side based in the Canadian city bearing the same name. The Eastern Conference franchise was founded 12 years ago on May 7th, 2010. 

Montréal has competed in the MLS for about 10 years and has also been involved in CONCACAF continental club competition finishing runners-up in the 2014-2015 season. They play their home matches at both the Saputo and Olympic stadiums. African football legend Didier Drogba played for the club.

3. Vancouver Whitecaps FC

The Vancouver-based side is another Canadian franchise team to have joined the MLS in the 2010s. The Whitecaps have played out of the Western Conference since their debut in 2011. 

They have won the Canadian Championship once in their history, in 2015. The Caps play their home games at the roughly 22000 capacity BC Place stadium in Vancouver. Bayern Munich left-back and Canadian international Alphonso Davies used to play for them.

4. Forge FC

The Hammers are record winners of the Canadian Premier League, having won it twice in their history. They were founded on May 6th, 2017. The Hamilton, Ontario-based club has also competed several times in CONCACAF club competitions. They play in an orange and white jerseys. Their home stadium is the Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ontario.

5. Pacific FC

Pacific was founded on June 1st, 2018, and they are based in Greater Victoria, British Columbia. Their jersey is a unique purple and white color, and they play at the 6000-capacity Starlight Stadium Langford. They are the 2021 CPL champions after they defeated Forge FC 0-1 in the finals.
