Italian top-flight football returned back in September, 2020 for the 2020/21 Serie A season. Last season (2019/20) was very exciting, and we are hoping that this year will be no different. There are a lot of who impressed in the Italian in 2020.
As we look forward to who wins the race for the scudetto, let’s check out some of the best Serie A midfielders in 2020. These are players whose consistent performances showed they were a cut above the rest.
1. Radja Nainggolan – Inter Milan
The 32-year Belgian did well this season. Featuring for Cagliari on loan from Inter Milan, Radja had one of his best individual seasons scoring 6 goals and assisting 7 times as his team finished 14th on the league. Despite personal challenges, The Belgian midfielder was still able to pull through and remind everyone of his qualities as being one of Serie A’s premier players. The 32-year-old has returned to Inter Milan for the 2020/21 season, and will look to help Antonio Conte’s side challenge Juventus for the Serie A crown.
2. Luis Alberto – Lazio
The Spanish international was exemplary for SS Lazio this past season. According to Opta stats the 27-year old created the most chances in the entire league a season-high 106 out of which 15 were assists second highest in the league. Luis was also no slouch in front of goal netting 6 times to help the White and Blues finish 4th and qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
3. Alejandro Gomez – Atalanta
Also known as Papu Gomez, the Argentine midfielder had an inspired season for Atalanta BC. Papu provided the highest number of assists (16) in the league to help Gli Oroboci finish 3rd in the league. The 32-year old also found the back of the net 7 times in the league to cap off a very impressive campaign. The Argentinian will be looking to continue where he left off as the new season approaches. Papu Gomez is one of the most underrated footballers in the world right now. However, he is still one of the best midfielders in the Italian League.
4. Hakan Calhanoglu – AC Milan
The German-born Turkish midfielder had a solid campaign for AC Milan. The 26-year old scored 9 goals as well providing 9 assists for the Rossoneri. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to help his team qualify for the Champions League places as they finished a disappointing 6th on the table. Hopefully, the new season will bring a change in fortunes as the Rossoneri seek a return to the title-winning ways of yesteryears. He has been instrumental as AC Milan have won three out of three of the league matches they’ve played so far. tThe Turkish deadball specialist will be crucial to AC Milan this season.
5. Fabian Ruiz – Napoli
The Spaniard was a key creative force for SSC Napoli last season chipping in with 3 goals and 6 assists last campaign. This could only fetch his team a 7th place finish. The Neapolitans will be looking for better output from their creative outlet as they aim for a better season in this upcoming league campaign.
Fabian Ruiz’s eye-catching performances had not gone unnoticed. The 24-year-old central midfielder has been sought after by many top European clubs and could leave Italy in the next transfer window.
