Football clubs have existed since the late 1800s; interestingly, many of them are still around today, either in their original name and form or with some varying degrees of rebranding and changes in name and color.

Football clubs were founded by students, workers, and communities in the early days.

Some are created by foreigners who are far from home and miss their home clubs and thus create something similar to what they love.

1. Barcelona

Barcelona may be an iconic Spanish club side and one of the world’s most successful.

In fact, they are currently one of the best soccer teams in the world.

However, their story won’t be complete without indicating that foreigners founded the club, a group of Swiss, Catalan, German, and English footballers led by Joan Gamper in 1899.

It Is one of the few clubs that supporters run, and it’s interesting to note that Barcelona started with an invitation by Hans Gamper in 1899 to those interested in forming a football team which was well responded to.

2. Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich was formed by footballers of Munich Gymnastic Club in 1900. The club was an instant serial winner recording high-margin victories.

However, the issues of World War 1 and World War 2 affected the club as it was regarded as a Jewish club; after Adolf Hitler, the Bavarians became Europe’s elite and Germany’s most successful club.

Interestingly, Bayern Munich are one of the soccer teams that have won the most trophies.

3. Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund is the second largest sports club by membership in Germany and was founded by 18 football players from Dortmund in 1909.

The interesting story about Borussia Dortmund is that it was created by a group of players who were unhappy with the management of Trinity Youth, a football team they played under.

The Borussia In their name comes from the area that is named Prussia.

Their famous yellow and black were not the first colors they wore as it was rather a striped blue and white shirt with your red sash until 1913.

4. Borussia Monchengladbach

Like Dortmund, Monchengladbach took Borussia as many clubs in the Kingdom of Prussia loved to do.

Also, like Dortmund, they were formed by a group of dissatisfied players who left their team in 1899.

In the early years, the club was purely called Borussia without the jaw-breaking name behind it. However, there was a club that had existed for over six years before Borussia; it was FC Monchengladbach, Borussia’s first rivals.

A lot of history lessons will pass before reaching the actual reasons Borussia and Monchengladbach merged, but it all started when Borussia acquired its own personal ground in Monchengladbach.

5. Beşiktaş J.K.

Beşiktaş Football Club was founded as Bereket Gymnastics Club was founded on 3 March 1903 and is based in Besiktas, Istanbul, Turkey.

It wasn’t until 1909 that they took the name Beşiktaş and the club has managed to become very successful with multiple league wins and even the only Turkish team to win the league unbeaten in 1991/1992.

Most of the highest-paid football players in the Turkish Super Lig play in Beşiktaş.

6. Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen is a combination of the name of the Pharmaceutical company whose workers founded the club, Bayer, and the city the company is based in, Leverkusen.

However, it wasn’t the football club that started first but the employees requesting the company’s support to start a sports club in 1903 and that got running in 1904, but it wasn’t until 1907 that the football department of the sports club was started.

In 1999, the football club became a separate entity on its own and separated from every other ball sport that was under its umbrella.

7. Bournemouth

Here is a club whose colours are inspired by AC Milan but never reached the heights of the Italians, Boscombe, as they were founded, was founded in 1899.

It wasn’t until several decades later, in 1971, that the club changed its name to Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic FC.

Boscombe was from an old institute football club, Boscombe institute football club. Bournemouth was added to make the club more representative of the district.

8. Burnley

Burnley was birthed from a rugby team Burnley Rover, who, in 1882 decided to follow the peer pressure in English sports then and become an association football team.

The club is one of the first to become professional and pay salaries to players; they were also relatively successful in the early 1900s.

Their colors claret and blue, were inspired by Aston Villa’s championship-winning feat in 1910/1911.

9. BATE Borisov

BATE Borisov was created initially in 1973 and was a strong team in the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic league, winning it three times before they were disbanded in 1984.

The name BATE comes from an acronym of Borisov Automobile and Tractor Electronics, while Borisov is an English version of the name of the Belarusian city they’re based in, Barysaw. They were re-established by Anatoli Kapski in 1996.

10. Bolton Wanderers

The club was founded by a reverend and was run by the church along with Christ Church Football Club until a dispute led to leaving their initial location leading to them becoming Bolton Wanderers in 1877 after using three different venues in four years.
