How Are Player Soccer Match Ratings Determined

Player ratings are a common feature of post-match analysis that always follow after the conclusion of a football game.

These ratings are usually computed and analyzed by soccer statistical websites or sports publications to give us an idea of how a given player performed during a match.

These rating grade footballers between 1-10, with 10 being the highest and 1 the lowest.

Player rankings are arrived at using certain criteria, and today, we will be exploring some of these determinants of ratings.

Overall performance

This criterion examines the total contributions of a said player in a match.

A player will be assessed individually to see if he performed at a generally acceptable level in his role for the team.

This looks at how a player impacts the general performance of the team.

Were you the most influential player in the attack? Did you put in a defensive shift even though you’re a striker? Were you driving and motivating the team in difficult situations?

These and other examples are what are assessed to determine how well you did in a match.

Impact on the result

Another criterion that add to ratings is a player’s overall contributions to the outcome of a match.

Did you score the winning goal? Were you the one that made the game-saving tackle?

As a goalkeeper, were you the one that made the crucial save that secured victory for your team?

This also determines the number you will be given for your ratings.

Individual match performance

As much as football is a team, analysts recognize that it is the individual performances of a player that can decide the outcomes of a match.

For example, did you bag a hattrick during a game? Did you make multiple saves as a goalkeeper even though your team lost? Did you make the most progressive passes in the match?

As a defender, did you excel in your primary responsibilities and still pop up to score an important goal for your team?

Another common method is to use statistical analysis to evaluate a player’s performance based on a variety of metrics, such as passes completed, tackles won, shots saved, clearances, shots taken, chances created, key passes, and duels won.

These and other individual metrics will also be used to compute your final overall score.

For example, Lionel Messi won the FIFA Golden Ball at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar because of his high ratings after every match.

Discipline

Another important metric in compiling ratings is a player’s discipline during a match.

A player who receives a yellow card or even gets sent off will also be downgraded in the final ratings, no matter how good his performance was on the day.

Match result

The outcome of a game tends to also reflect on the ratings of a player, either negative or positive.

If your team wins, chances are that you will get a positive rating even though your performance was average.

On the flip side, a negative result could also give you unfavourable ratings even though you were one of the better performers for your team.

WhoScored.com is one of the biggest websites that publishes player ratings in soccer.

According to them, their ratings are based on a specific, unique, comprehensive statistical algorithm, which is calculated live during the game.

They use over 200 raw statistics included in the calculation of a player’’s/team’’s rating, based on their influence within the game.
