6 Best Footballers Who Never Won Anything

Leighton Baines Best Footballers Who Never Won Anything

Ask any soccer player worth his salt what his greatest ambitions are, and you will likely hear him say he wants to be one of the best in his position and also accumulate numerous winners’ trophies. Quite a good number of footballers have achieved the former, performing at the highest levels winning the admiration of fans and opponents alike. Despite this, a sizeable few have fallen short, going trophyless throughout their entire career.

1. Luigi Di Biagio

The former Italian international and interim manager was one of the best defensive midfielders in the world during his playing days. Di Biagio played for many great club sides in Italy like AS Roma and Inter Milan, but somehow never won trophies with them. His luck with the Azzurri wasn’t any better. Despite being part of Italian squads that had great talents like Paolo Maldini, Francesco Totti, Del Piero, Luigi ended up winning nothing.

2. Di Natale

Antonio Di Natale

Di Natale was a star in Serie A during his playing career and constantly led the scoring charts. However, he failed to make it to the final of any major competition with Udinese. He is considered a Udinese legend with 227 goals in 446 games for the Italian side and also scored 11 in 42 appearances for Italy. The closest he came to winning a trophy was the 2012 Euros, where Di Natale came off the bench during Italy’s 4-0 defeat to Spain in the final. Di Natale was a late bloomer in football, and enjoyed his most prolific seasons in front of goal well after age 30.

3. Robert Lee

The former English professional football was one of the most exciting midfielders during his time. Lee featured for English Premier League side Newcastle United for 10 years between 1992-2002. Despite being part of the entertaining and free-scoring Tyneside club of the mid-90s he never won a major trophy. The closest he got was two FA Cup runners-up medals in the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons. He was also part of the Newcastle side that finished agonizingly second to eventual winners Manchester United in the 1995-96 EPL season.

4. Yildiray Basturk

The talented former Turkish attacking midfielder is another player who despite his vast abilities somehow never won a trophy with the teams he played for. The German-born Turkish international played for many German club sides like Bayer Leverkusen, Hertha Berlin, and VfB Stuttgart. He came very close to winning the 2001-2002 UEFA Champions League but lost 2-1 in the finals to eventual winners Real Madrid.

5. Guiseppe Signori

The retired Italian forward is arguably one of the greatest strikers to have played in the Serie A. Signori finished top scorer of the Italian top-flight an impressive three times playing for various clubs like Lazio, Sampdoria, and Bologna. Guiseppe, despite his goal-scoring exploits, never won a major trophy over the 20 plus years of his career from the early 1980s to the mid- 2000s.

6. Leighton Baines

Leighton Baines

At a point in his career, Baines was the most sought-after left-back in English football. The Englishman was famous for his crossing and lethal accuracy from set-pieces was held down the left-back position for the English national team. Leighton Baines spent most of his career at Everton, where he never won any trophy. He came close to winning a trophy in 2009, but was on the losing side in an FA Cup final, and has also won runners-up medals in the League Cup and Championship with Wigan.
