    International football is one of the most keenly contested areas of football worldwide.

    Many nations compete, year in year out, in various continental or international competitions in a bid to win a trophy.

    A few countries, due to their pedigree and level of talent, have been able to win more international trophies than others.

    Today, you will find out the 10 great countries that have won the most trophies in football.

    We will be focusing on relevant continental, international tournaments. Here are the ten countries with the most football trophies.

    1. Argentina – 23 Trophies

    The Argentinian national team is another South American team that has amassed so many trophies over the years.

    Their triumph this year at the 2021 Copa America tourney equaled the tally of rivals Brazil for the greatest number of trophies won in international football.

    In total, Argentina has won 16 Copa Americas, 3 FIFA World Cups, and 1 Confederation Cup title.

    They also have two Olympic gold medals in football, and they recently clinched the 2022 Finalissima trophy, which brings their total major trophies 23.

    It is no surprise that Argentina lead among the countries with the most international trophies, as they are said to be the only nation to have produced two GOATs, Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi.

    Argentina won the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar as Lionel Messi, Emiliano Martinez, and the rest of his teammates produced a masterclass performance to give Argentina their third World Cup title.

    Los Albiceleste’s most recent international trophy was the 2024 Copa America, which they won in emphatic fashion in USA, triumphing over Colombia in extra-time.

    Lionel Messi and Argentina are now the second team in history to win three consecutive international trophies including a World Cup, after Spain.

    Argentina are now the country with the most trophies in football with an astonishing 23 major trophies.

    2. Brazil – 20 Trophies

    It’s no surprise that the Samba boys have won a staggering amount of international trophies, with 20 so far won across various competitions.

    The South American giants have won the Copa America on 9 occasions and currently hold the record for most FIFA World Cup triumphs, having won it 5 times.

    Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, Pelé led Brazil to three World Cup victories during the most successful period in the nation’s footballing history.

    The Brazilians have also clinched the FIFA Confederations Cup on 4 occasions, to cement their position as the greatest international team in world football history.

    They have also won the gold medal at the Olympic football tournament twice.

    This included their win of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Men’s Football Tournament win.

    Brazilian player, Dani Alves is the player with the most trophies won in the history of football, which is 44.

    3. Uruguay – 19 Trophies

    Despite its small size, in terms of population and geography, this South American country more than pulls its weight in international football competition.

    Surprisingly the Uruguayans have been able to win 19 trophies across major competitions since their first triumph in 1916.

    Uruguay has won a joint record of 15 Copa America titles, 2 Olympic gold medals in football, and 2 FIFA World Cup trophies.

    This makes this proud football nation one of the most successful teams ever in international soccer.

    Some of the greatest Uruguayan players of all-time have contributed heavily to their trophy cabinet.

    4. Mexico – 12 Trophies

    This soccer-crazy North American country is surprisingly on the list of nations that have won the most football trophies thanks to the near-complete dominance of their confederation’s competition, the CONCACAF Cup.

    The trophy accounts for 12 of Mexico’s 13 total football triumphs. Their journey of success began in 1965, and since then, they have dominated the CONCACAF Championships, winning the title 12 times, with their most recent triumph in 2023 under the leadership of Jaime Lozano.

    The Mexicans only other trophy won was the FIFA Confederation Cup which they won in 1999.

    In a memorable final, Miguel Zepeda scored twice to lead Mexico to a thrilling 4-3 victory over Brazil, cementing their place in football history.

    5. United States of America – 10 Trophies

    The United States competes in several continental tournaments, including the CONCACAF Gold Cup, CONCACAF Nations League, and Copa América.

    The U.S. has secured seven Gold Cups and three Nations League titles, making them one of the most decorated nations in international football.

    Despite being one of the most populated countries in the world, the United States has struggled to produce a significant number of world-class stars. However, this has not hindered their ability to achieve success on the international stage.

    Recent back-to-back CONCACAF Nations League victories have significantly boosted the USMNT’s standing in international football, making them one of the national teams with the most trophies.

    Historically, the U.S. has not performed as well in World Cup tournaments, with their best finish occurring in the inaugural 1930 World Cup, where they achieved third place.

    6. Germany – 9 Trophies

    The German national team are one of the strongest and most successful international teams currently in world football.

    Since their first triumph in 1954, a FIFA World Cup trophy, they haven’t looked backed.

    The Germans have in total 9 titles in their trophy-laden cabinet.

    These include 4 World Cups, 3 European Championships, one Olympic gold medal in football, and have also clinched one FIFA Confederations Cup title.

    7. France – 9 Trophies

    Founded in 1904, the French national team, Les Bleus, boasts nine major international trophies, including two FIFA World Cups, two UEFA European Championships, and one UEFA Nations League title.

    France’s journey began as one of the four European teams in the inaugural 1930 World Cup, and they clinched third place in 1958, led by legends Raymond Kopa and Just Fontaine.

    Their golden eras span the 1980s, late 1990s to early 2000s, and late 2010s to early 2020s.

    The 1980s saw Michel Platini steer France to Euro 1984 glory and a CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions victory.

    The late ’90s and early 2000s were dominated by Didier Deschamps and Zinedine Zidane, bringing home the 1998 World Cup, Euro 2000, and two Confederations Cups.

    Spain’s football legacy is marked by a period of unmatched dominance in the early 2010s under the guidance of Vicente del Bosque.

    La Roja’s golden era began with a victory in the Euro 2008 final, where Fernando Torres’ iconic chip secured the win over Germany.

    This triumph was followed by Spain’s first World Cup win in 2010 and another European Championship title in 2012, solidifying their status as one of the greatest teams in football history.

    9. Italy – 7 Trophies

    Italy is one of the most successful national teams in football history, boasting seven major trophies.

    They have won the FIFA World Cup four times (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006) and have been runners-up twice (1970, 1994), with additional finishes in third (1990) and fourth (1978) place.

    Italy has also claimed two European Championships (1968, 2020) and appeared in two other finals (2000, 2012).

    In addition to these achievements, Italy finished as runners-up in the 2022 CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions and secured third place in both the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013 and the UEFA Nations League in 2021 and 2023.

    Their most recent triumph came at Wembley Stadium in 2020, where they defeated England in a penalty shootout to win the European Championship, ending a 14-year trophy drought since their 2006 World Cup victory over France.

    All seven of their major trophies have come from this prestigious tournament, with their most recent victory in 2010. As Africa’s oldest national football team, Egypt has set numerous records, including winning the AFCON a record seven times.

    Egypt has also made history on the global stage, being the first African and Middle Eastern team to participate in the World Cup, with three appearances to date.

    Notably, their former goalkeeper Essam El Hadary holds the record for the oldest player to have competed in a World Cup.

    The North African country has produced some remarkable African football legends.

    However, despite the efforts of star player Mohamed Salah, Egypt narrowly missed out on adding another trophy to their collection, losing to Senegal in the 2022 AFCON final.
