Many left-backs have impressed over the past year. A few have, however distinguished themselves with noteworthy performances in various competitions played over the past few months. Here are 5 of the best left-backs in the 2020/21 football season.
1. Alphonso Davies
This has been a breakout year for the talented Canadian international Left-back. Blessed with great skill and tireless running, the 20-year-old has come up in leaps and bounds. Last season Alphonso established himself as one of the world’s best left-backs with outstanding performances for his club side Bayern Munich. Davies was especially devastating in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds. Alphonso was a key member of the Bayern team that ruthlessly thrashed Spanish side FC Barcelona in the quarterfinals 8-2. The talented left-back provided one of the key highlights of the game, skillfully dribbling the Barcelona defender on his way to giving an assist for one of Bayern’s goals. Davies would later help the Bavarians claim their 6th Champions League trophy. This season, he has had a few injury problems, which have restricted his playing time.
2. Luke Shaw
The Manchester United left-back has had an upswing of form over the past year and a half. Shaw has easily been one of the Red Devil’s best players over the past few months with his consistent assured displays in defense. The 25-year-old, apart from being solid in defense has also contributed in attack for the Old Trafford side. At the time of this writing, Luke Shaw has scored 1 goal and provided six assists this season.
3. Andrew Robertson
The Scottish international Left-back was part of an unstoppable Liverpool FC side that has been so dominant over the past 2 years. The 27-year-old has stood out with his attacking bursts and precision crosses that have made the Merseysiders such a dangerous side to defend against. Robertson has so far made 65 league appearances over the past two years helping Liverpool win a Premier League and Champions League title within that period. This season, Robertson has been at in great form for Liverpool.
4. Jordi Alba
Despite Barcelona’s struggles over the past year, Alba has continued to put in consistent fine displays. The Spanish international Left-back was ever-present for the Catalans, making over 60 league appearances over the past 2 years. Apart from his defensive displays, Jordi has also been effective in attack this season, scoring 5 goals and providing 10 assists.
5. Ferland Mendy
It’s not easy to play for one of the most famous clubs in the world like Real Madrid. Ferland, since his move to the Bernabeu in 2019, has not only played, but displaced a prominent player like Marcelo to become Los Blancos’ first choice left-back. The 25-year-old Frenchman has featured over 50 times in the past 12 months and a half, scoring thrice within that same period. He is a strong left-back, with great balance and excellent movement. It’s had to take the ball of him, and he is very solid defensively.
