Winners And Losers Of The Champions League Group Stage Draws
The group stage draws of the Champions league has been completed and there are a lot of fascinating ties there. The five Premier league teams in the Champions league all had their fate decided today, and while some are happy with the draws, some are really worried. So, let’s look at the winners and losers of the UEFA Champions League 2017/2018 group stage draws.
1. Manchester United
Manchester United are undoubtedly happy with there draw, considering how far worse it would have been. They managed to draw Benefica from the mighty pot 1, which were not among the difficult teams there. Jose Mourinho will definitely be satisfied with the draw and will look to qualify as soon as possible.
Although, under Manchester United failed to qualify in a similar group like this two years ago under David Moyes, expect them to qualify now, they are a different team now.
2. Manchester City
The other Manchester team are also on the winning side from this season’s group stage draw. In there past three they have always ended up drawing the difficult teams in pot 1. But this time the were drawn with Shaktar Donestk. Napoli are also in their group but that can’t prove to be that difficult for the Cityzens. So, expect Guardiola’s men to come out of group F in flying colors.
Liverpool are back to the Champions league after a brief stint away. There are a rejuvenated team under Jurgen Klopp and can cause an upset to almost any team in Champions league. Liverpool might have expected their draws to be difficult since they were in pot 3. Nonetheless, They will be happy with their group stage draw because they were picked with Spartak Moscow and Sevilla. They won’t be easy for them, but Klopp will be satisfied he has a fighting chance in this group.
1. Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham might have been hoping that this would be there breakout season in the Champions league. Unfortunately, their hopes of qualifying hangs in a thin white and yellow thread. They have been drawn with Real Madrid and Dortmund in Group H. Mauricio Pochettino will never have wished to be drawn with the unstoppable Real Madrid and will definitely not be happy with this group, but his team can spring up a surprise. Dortmund are a good team too, and with great attacking quality like Tottenham, this is one exciting group.
Barcelona have not always had ‘easy’ group stage draws, but this group is different than before. Barcelona are no longer as strong and feared as they used to be, and they would not have wanted Juventus to be in there group. Ernesto Valverde has not been having a joyride since his began coaching, but will have to find a way to deal with Juventus. Barcelona can still Improve ahead of the Champions league. However, they will have to have to send a statement by coming out top if group D.
3. FK Qarabag
FK Qarabag are the first team ever from Azerbaijan to qualify for the Champions League group stage. Although, they would not have hoped to qualify out of their group, they would have wanted to win a game or two in front of their home fans. But being drawn with Chelsea, Athletico Madrid, and AS Roma, their chances of winning a match are so slim. This is a difficult group and none of the 3 aforementioned teams above will want to lose to lose to Qarabag away.
