Every four years we are served with mesmerizing football in the World Cup. Much is also expected to happen at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. There is bound to be a lot of goals, enthralling performances and dramas. One thing again that we are certain to see are dark horses in the World Cup 2018.

Each World Cup, there is always an underdog team, would go ahead to perform beyond expectations. We saw what Senegal did in the 2002 World Cup, where they beat reigning World Cup champions France and reached the quarterfinals. In 2010, it was Ghana who defied all odds to make it to the quarterfinals of the World Cup. And in the last World Cup, who could forget how Costa Rica defeated many World Cup favourites to reach the World Cup quarterfinals. Well, who the teams who have the potential of defying the odds and surprising egg everyone at the World Cup. Who are the dark horses in the FIFA 2018 World Cup?

1. Egypt

Egypt is without a doubt one of the dark horses at the World Cup. This is there first World Cup since 1990 and they are out to prove their worth. They had a stellar qualifying campaign, topping a group that had most of Africa’s best teams. That is not all though they have in their ranks, one of the most outstanding players of the Premier League, in Mohammed Salah and Hegazi. Egypt is also in a relatively easy group.


2. Belgium

Belgium might have established themselves as a top team in Europe, but not as a top team internationally. There last World Cup outing ended our a slightly sour note. They do have the players, like Hazard, Lukaku and De Bryne, that can take them far in the tournament, but that would be an astonishing feat if they are to go far. If the players play unitedly as a team, they could be a strong force to contend with.

3. Portugal

There are a lot of people who never expected Portugal to perform so well at the Euro 2016. There could turn out to be a dark horse in World Cup 2018. They have a solid team with so many talents. They also have the reigning FIFA Player of the year in their ranks, along with exciting young talents like Goncalo Guedes and Bernado Silva. Portugal is a team to watch indeed.

4. South Korea

The Asian side is one of the few teams that qualified very early for the World Cup. They have one of the best players in Premier League in Heung Min Son. They do have many other good players too. They pulled one of the greatest shocks of the tournament when they reached the Semifinals of the World Cup which they co-hosted in 2002.

5. Nigeria

The Super Eagles Of Nigeria are definitely one of the dark horses of the World Cup. There were not expected to qualify out of their difficult group en route to the World Cup, but they did so excellently. They have spectacular players in their team and are acting squad with bubbling talents. But for them to excel, they will have to scale through a tough World Cup Group which contains Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.
