The French top tier football competition Ligue 1 came to an unceremonious end when the 2019/2020 season was ended due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic. The French league had been building up nicely to an exciting finish before the games had to be suspended and eventually cancelled by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP). In spite of the premature end of the league, we were still able to witness breath-taking performances in this shortened campaign.
Today we pay tribute to the men behind sticks, the last line of defense, and safest pair of hands in the league. These are the 5 best goalkeepers in the recently ended 2019/20 Ligue 1 season.
1. Alexander Oukidja – FC Metz
The French-born Algerian international has been ever-present this season for his side FC Metz. The 31-year-old kept an impressive 8 clean sheets in 28 matches together with an amazing 99 saves, the joint highest in the league. These stand out performances were very crucial in helping his club avoid the drop in this abridged league campaign. He has made an average of 2.1 saves in the penalty box.
2. Predrag Rajkovic – Stade de Reims
The Stade de Reims shot-stopper has been imperious in between the sticks this season. The Serbian international amassed a joint league-high of 12 clean sheets in his debut season to help guide his team to 6th position on the league table. With an impressive save and clean sheet percentage of 0.84 and 44.4 respectively, the 24-year-old has been one of the breakout stars of this season.
3. Keylor Navas – PSG
The Costa Rican number one has had a very solid first season in French football. The 33-year-old goalkeeper has been reliable for the champions Paris Saint Germain this season in goal. He has kept 11 clean sheets in 21 appearances helping the Parisians secure their 7th straight league title. The former Real Madrid keeper also has a league-high clean sheet percentage of 52.4.
4. Mike Maignan – Lille OSC
The French international goalkeeper finished the season joint highest in terms of clean sheets with 12 clean sheets to help his club Lille OSC finish 4th on the log. Mike followed on from last season, where he was voted the best goalkeeper in Ligue 1 with another solid season. The 25-year-old helped in steadying one of the leagues stingiest defenses with an impressive 42.9% clean sheet ratio. He his arguably one of the best goalkeepers in Ligue 1, and has been linked with a move to Chelsea.
5. Edouard Mendy – Stade Rennais F.C.
The Senegalese bigman was very good for his club Stade Rennais in this his debut season for Les Rennais. The 28-year-old kept a solid 9 clean sheets with an impressive save percentage of 0.78. Edouard’s performances were very instrumental in his club, finishing 3rd in the league and qualifying for a Champions League playoff spot.
