1. Pelé

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, commonly known as Pelé, is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time.

He was born on October 23, 1940, in Tres Coracoes, Brazil, and began playing football at a very young age.

Pelé’s natural talent, technical skill, and extraordinary goal-scoring abilities made him a generational talent in football.

Pele’s achievements in football are numerous and impressive. He played for Santos FC in Brazil from 1956 to 1974, scoring a staggering 643 goals in 656 competitive matches.

He also won numerous titles and awards during his time at Santos, including 10 Sao Paulo State Championships, 5 Brazilian Championships, and 2 Copa Libertadores titles.

Pelé was also a key player on the Brazilian national team, helping them win three World Cup titles in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

In 1976, he made his professional debut for Argentinos Juniors, and within a few years, he had become one of the most sought-after players in the world.

During his time at Napoli, he also won the FIFA World Player of the Year award twice, in 1986 and 1990.

Perhaps Maradona’s greatest achievement, however, came in the 1986 World Cup. He led Argentina to victory in the tournament, scoring five goals and providing five assists, and was named the player of the tournament. 

His most famous moment came in the quarterfinals against England when he scored what is widely regarded as the greatest goal in World Cup history.

Cruyff’s skill, vision, and intelligence on the field made him a generational talent, and his achievements and influence in football have been immense.

As a youngster, Cruyff was already making a name for himself in the football world.

He joined Ajax Amsterdam, one of the most successful clubs in Dutch football history, when he was just 10 years old.

He quickly rose through the ranks and made his debut for the first team at the age of 17.

Cruyff helped lead Ajax to an unprecedented three consecutive European Cup titles in the early 1970s, scoring in the final of each of those tournaments.

He also won eight Eredivisie titles with Ajax during this period, as well as a Dutch Cup.

Cruyff’s success at Ajax earned him a transfer to Barcelona in 1973, where he continued to dominate.

He won La Liga in his first season with the club, as well as the Copa del Rey. He was also named European Footballer of the Year in both 1973 and 1974.

The Dutchman was regarded as a football genius as a player, and even when he became a coach he was still a successful manager.

4. Zinedine Zidane

As a youngster, Zidane played for a number of youth teams in France before joining AS Cannes in 1989.

He made his professional debut for Cannes in 1991 and quickly established himself as one of the most promising young players in the country.

In 1992, Zidane was signed by Bordeaux and helped the club win the French Cup in 1996. He was named the French Player of the Year in 1996 and 1997, and his performances caught the attention of top clubs around Europe.

In 1996, Zidane moved to Juventus in Italy and won two Serie A titles and the UEFA Champions League in his five seasons with the club. He was named the FIFA World Player of the Year in 1998, 2000, and 2003.

Zidane’s greatest achievement came in the 1998 World Cup, where he led France to victory on home soil.

He scored two goals in the final against Brazil and was named the tournament’s Best Player. He also played a key role in France’s triumph at Euro 2000, scoring a memorable goal in the final against Italy.

5. Ronaldo Nazário

When you talk about the greatest strikers in football, no one will forget to mention the name of the Brazilian legend Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima.

Ronaldo Nazário was such a generational talent, and it was obvious in his early days.

At 12 years old, he became a member of the Social Ramos futsal team. During his first season, he achieved an outstanding accomplishment by scoring a total of 166 goals, which led the city’s youth league in scoring. In fact, he even managed to score 11 of his team’s 12 goals in a single game.

Ronaldo began playing for the São Cristóvão youth team, and although he was only 15, he played for the clubs’ under-17 and under-20 teams.

He went on to become a football legend.

Ronaldo won the FIFA World Cup twice with Brazil, in 1994 and 2002. He was the top scorer in the 2002 tournament and also won the Golden Ball award for being the best player in the tournament.

He won the Ballon d’Or twice times, in 1997 and 2002.

Ronaldo won league titles in Brazil, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands and was the top scorer in the league in each of these countries.

Ronaldo scored a total of 62 goals in 98 international appearances for Brazil, making him the third-highest scorer in the history of the Brazilian national team.

He also scored a total of 352 goals in 518 club appearances playing for teams such as Cruzeiro, PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Corinthians.

6. Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi has already established his name as the undisputed footballer of all time. 

Even when he began his career, he showed glimpses that proved that he was a generational talent.

As a youth, he progressed tremendously when he joined Barcelona and became an integral member of the squad.

In the 2006 World Cup, he became the youngest player to represent Argentina at a FIFA World Cup when he came on as a substitute in the 74th minute. He assisted their fourth strike within minutes and scored the final goal in their 6–0 victory.

7. Kylian Mbappé

Still only 24, some might think it’s too early to call Kylian Mbappé a generational talent, but the boy from Bondy is definitely one.

During the early stages of his career, his youth coaches all noticed something different about him and called him a phenomenon.

When he was 18, he became the youngest player in the last 30 years to hit the Ligue 1 ten-career-goals mark. 

He also became the youngest player in Champions League history to reach twenty goals (although this record would then be surpassed later by Erling Haaland)

In the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Mbappé announced his name to the world. 

He scored twice for France in their knock-out against Argentina, and in doing so, Mbappé became the second teenager to score two goals in a World Cup match after Pelé in 1958.

He also became the second teenager, after Pelé, to score in a World Cup Final,

At 24, Mbappé became the first PSG player to score five goals in a match, including a ten-minute hattrick, in a 7–0 thrashing of Pays de Cassel in the Coupe de France round of 32.

He was the highest goalscorer in the 2022 World Cup with eight goals, including a stunning hattrick in the final of the tournament.

Apart from all his achievements, his exceptional skills, blistering speed, physical attributes, and mental toughness are some of the factors that contribute to his status as a generational talent.

In addition, Mbappé has excellent ball control, dribbling skills and can finish with both feet. He has the ability to create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates, making him a potent attacking threat.
