Some of the reasons why footballers are hated include engaging in off-the-pitch scandals, diving, fighting, dirty/rough play, dark arts, insults, and other controversies.

1. Sergio Ramos

Sergio Ramos is a notoriously rough-tackling defender with a fiery temper and a penchant for kicking and elbowing his opponents.

Ramos employs dark arts when playing, including using his hands to stop the opposition from scoring.

These issues have earned him a bad reputation throughout the football world, especially from opposition teams.

Nevertheless, after his remarkable move to Sevilla, inspite of interest from Saudi Arabia, Ramos has garnered some love from football fans.

Luis Suarez first drew global contempt when he handled the ball on the line to prevent a goal against Ghana in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

While playing for Ajax, he bit an opponent.

After moving to the English Premier League, Suarez was repeatedly accused of diving.

Moreso, he got a lengthy ban for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra and subsequently refused to shake the latter’s hands when their teams met.

The Uruguayan striker bit Branislav Ivanovich in a 2013 match against Chelsea and Giorgio Chiellini in a 2014 FIFA World Cup match against Italy.

While Steffan Effenburg was known for his leadership skills, passing range, shooting ability, and physical strength, he was also infamous for his temperamental and controversial character.

The German had a history of attracting attention and ire from fans, managers, and players alike with his behavior.

In 2001, Effenberg was fined after being found guilty of assaulting a woman in a nightclub.

The following year, he implied that unemployed people in Germany were, in fact, too lazy to look for work and demanded they take benefit cuts.

Furthermore, he published a controversial autobiography, notorious for its blatant contents – which included lashing out at some other football professionals, namely club and national side mate Lothar Matthaus.

7. John Terry

John Terry became public enemy when he impregnated Vanessa Perroncel, the girlfriend of then-Chelsea teammate Wayne Bridge.

There were even allegations that Terry forced her to have an abortion.

Bridge and Perroncel reportedly split months before the affair. Still, the sordid details left the English squad in turmoil. Manager Fabio Capello stripped Terry of his captaincy, and Bridge removed himself from consideration for the World Cup team.

Terry further dampened his reputation when he racially abused QPR’s Anton Ferdinand in 2011.

8. Ryan Giggs

Ryan Giggs was a brilliant soccer player and athlete, but his image was shattered when it was revealed that he had engaged in an eight-year-long affair with his brother’s wife!

The affair resulted in members of Giggs’ family repudiating their former ties to Ryan. After Ryan was appointed as manager of the Wales national team, his father Danny said he was “ashamed” of him and that “I can’t even bring myself to use his name”.

In 2011, Giggs allegedly obtained an anonymized gagging order in relation to an alleged extra-marital affair with model Imogen Thomas.

In November 2020, Giggs was arrested on suspicion of two counts of assault against his ex-girlfriend, Kate Greville, and her younger sister, Emma.

9. El-Hadji Diouf

El-Hadji Diouf is never too far away from controversies.

He had a disgusting habit of spitting at opponents and even fans, which got him into trouble many times!

He was once convicted of driving without a license and was involved in a car crash.

On 20 September 2009, Diouf was questioned by police after allegations that he had made a racial slur to a ball-boy during a match at Everton, telling him to “fuck off, white boy.”

On 8 January 2011, following Blackburn’s 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers in the FA Cup third round, QPR manager Neil Warnock accused Diouf of taunting Jamie Mackie whilst the latter lay on the pitch injured with a broken leg and referred to Diouf as “lower than a sewer rat.”

In April 2012, Diouf and five other men were arrested following reports of a nightclub brawl in Manchester. One man was seriously injured, and Diouf was bailed for a week.

In 2013, Diouf was shown a controversial red card at Elland Road after making offensive gestures towards the Brighton away fans.

10. Pepe

Pepe is infamous for his aggressive, combative, dangerous, and hard-tackling style of play.

The Portuguese defender regularly draws criticism in the media due to his tendency to pick up cards, unsportsmanlike behavior, diving, and violent challenges on the pitch.

For example, in a tense Clasico in March 2014, Pepe and Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas on the pitch.

They had a heated discussion before Pepe gave the Spaniard’s forehead a nudge with his own.

Funnily enough, the contact made both men collapse in agony on the floor. Neither player ended up covering themselves in glory here.

However, one of the main reason why Pepe is the most hated footballers is because of his obvious hatred for Lionel Messi.

During his time in La Liga with Real Madrid, he was always red-carded for his overly aggressive tackles on the beloved Argentine legend.
