Biography
Simmy, as he is fondly called, was born in the eastern Nigerian city named Onitsha on the 7th of May, 1992. Not much is known about his youth career, but he started out in Portugal. From 2011 to 2016, Nwankwo featured for a couple of Portuguese sides, first Portimonense and later Gil Vicente, with whom he scored 9 league goals in 35 matches over two seasons.
In the summer of 2016, the then 24-year-old signed for newly promoted Italian Serie A Crotone. In his first season, he scored 3 league goals in 21 appearances. Simy posted improved performances the following season, scoring 7 league goals in 23 appearances. One of them, a spectacular overhead kick against league champions Juventus, played on the 18th of April, 2018.
Unfortunately, his late-season form couldn’t prevent the Pythagoreans from getting relegated from the Serie A 2017-2018 campaign. The lanky forward continued to be in impressive goal-scoring form, netting a total of 34 goals in 60 matches played over two seasons in Serie B.
This included 20 goals in the 2019-2020 Serie B season, which helped Crotone gain promotion back to the Serie A. Nwankwo marked his return to the Italian top flight with another fine goal scoring campaign scoring an impressive 20 goals to finish fifth in the goal scorer’s chart for the season. Unfortunately, his goals were not enough to keep his club in the Serie A as Crotone was immediately relegated back to Serie B.
Simy left the Italian south coast club in the summer of 2021, joining newly-promoted Serie A club Salernitana on loan for the rest of the 2021-2022 season. So far, he has scored just the solitary goal in 8 appearances.
International Career
Simy gained the attention of Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr towards the end of the 2018 European league campaign. His eye-catching late-season performances earned him a surprise inclusion in Nigeria’s squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, making cameo appearances against group stage opponents Croatia and Argentina. Nwankwo was thereafter snubbed for future call-ups before his recent recall for the two sets of friendly games against Cameroon in June 2021. The forward had to pull out of the friendly matches due to a slight injury and hasn’t been called since.
