    Brazilian goalkeeper Fábio Deivson Lopes Maciel officially surpassed Peter Shilton’s long-standing record for the most competitive appearances in world football, making his 1,391st match during Fluminense’s Copa Sudamericana win over América de Cali.

    The 44-year-old, who debuted professionally in 1997, has played for clubs including Vasco da Gama, Cruzeiro, and Fluminense, with the bulk of his appearances (976) coming at Cruzeiro. Despite never earning a senior Brazil cap, Fábio has remained a consistent figure in Brazilian football, celebrated for his longevity, leadership, and resilience.

    Fluminense honored their goalkeeper with tributes during the historic night, highlighting his remarkable career achievements, including a Copa Libertadores triumph in 2023 and a record-breaking 507 clean sheets, surpassing Gianluigi Buffon.

    With a contract extension keeping him at the club until 2026, Fábio is set to continue extending his record well into his mid-40s, cementing his legacy as one of football’s greatest examples of durability and commitment.

    When he first played for Fluminense on February 4, 2022, against Audax Rio, he set a new record as the club’s oldest player at 41 years and 120 days, breaking the previous record held by Magno Alves.

    In November 2023, at 43 years old, Fábio not only secured the Copa Libertadores title but also became the first Brazilian to surpass 100 matches in the competition, ranking third overall behind Paraguayan players Sergio Aquino and Ever Almeida.

    His participation in the final also made him the oldest player to both compete in and win a Copa Libertadores final.
