Corner kicks are precious dead-ball situations that teams usually utilize to try and score against the opposition. This involves crossing from the corner flag area parallel to the opposition goal for onrushing teammates to head or kick into their opponent’s net. The Corner kick goal, otherwise called the Olympic goal, is one of the rarest goals you can find in today’s game. Not every player can pull this off, but when executed, it is a beautiful sight to behold. Today we take a look some famous players who have scored directly from a corner kick.
1. Toni Kroos
The German and Real Madrid midfielder is respected for his technical proficiency on the ball and set-piece delivery. This was on display during the Spanish Super Cup played on the 8th of January 2020 against Valencia CF. Kroos spotted the Valencia Keeper Jaume Domenech slightly off his line, busy organizing his centre-backs to defend a corner kick. Toni quickly took a sharp corner that sailed over the scrambling Valencia goalkeeper to score an incredible goal that set his team Madrid for an impressive 3-1 triumph over their opponents.
The legendary winger produced a moment of magic on the 31st of August 2011. Ronaldinho scored straight from the corner kick for Clube de Regatas do Flamengo in Brazilian Serie A match against Avaí Futebol Clube. With utmost precision and power, Ronaldinho struck a lovely corner kick that flew over the flailing arms of Avai FC Goalkeeper Felipe Garcia.
3. David Beckham
This list won’t be complete without the presence of one of the best hitters of the dead ball. Beckham scored this goal during his time with Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy FC. During a league match against Chicago Fire FC in 2012, David whipped in one of his trademark corners which evaded the Chicago Fire Keeper and defender to nestle calmly in the opposition goal.
4. Roberto Carlos
The legendary Brazilian left-back was always known to score spectacular goals, so it’s no surprise he would also get on the goal-scoring from the corner train. Roberto scored quite a few screamers, but this one in a Brazilian league match against Portuguesa in 2011 will take some beating.
5. Thierry Henry
The Arsenal legend scored many jaw-dropping goals during his illustrious career, including one directly from the corner. This was in an MLS league match against Columbus Crew FC for his side New York Red Bull in 2012. The Frenchman hit an almost nonchalant corner kick that evaded all markers before finding its way into the net.
