Colombia are back at the FIFA World Cup after missing Qatar 2022, and they arrive as one of the most dangerous dark horse teams in the tournament.

Under Argentine coach Néstor Lorenzo, they finished third in CONMEBOL qualifying with 28 points, beat Argentina and Brazil, ran a 28-match unbeaten streak, and reached the 2024 Copa América final — losing 1-0 to Argentina in extra time in Miami.

They are in Group K alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan, and DR Congo.

Portugal are the group favourites, but Colombia fancy themselves as genuine contenders for second and potentially even first.

Luis Díaz and James Rodríguez lead the charge.

Here are the 10 best soccer players from Colombia at the 2026 World Cup.

    1. Luis Díaz — Forward

    Position: Winger/Forward
Age: 29 | Club: Bayern Munich (Germany)

Luis Díaz is Colombia’s most dangerous player and one of the most electric wide forwards in world football right now.

He moved from Liverpool to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2025 and had a staggering debut season — scoring 26 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions, helping Bayern win the Bundesliga, after having scored just 41 goals in 148 appearances over four seasons at Liverpool.

He also finished as the second-highest scorer in all of CONMEBOL qualifying with 7 goals, including a brace against Brazil that was one of the standout individual performances of the entire campaign.

With 74 caps and 22 international goals, he is Colombia’s most potent attacking weapon and the player opponents will spend the most time planning around.

He is one of the fastest and most direct wide forwards at this World Cup and one of the best left wingers in world football.

    2. James Rodríguez — Midfielder (Captain)

James Rodríguez is Colombia’s captain and the player around whom an entire generation of Colombian football was built.

He won the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup with 6 goals, earned a move to Real Madrid, and became one of the most recognisable footballers on the planet.

Now 34 and at Minnesota United in MLS, he is in the twilight of his career, but remains Colombia’s most creative force and the player who controls the tempo of everything Lorenzo builds.

With 126 caps and 31 international goals, he departed his club on May 13 to begin tournament preparations early, such is his importance to this squad.

He is one of the best playmakers South America has produced in his generation and one of the most prolific scoring midfielders in CONMEBOL history.

    3. Richard Ríos — Midfielder

With 32 caps and 2 international goals, he gives Lorenzo a younger, more physical option alongside James in the engine room.

He is one of the best young central midfielders in South American football and a player whose best years are very much ahead of him.

He partners Jhon Lucumí to form Colombia’s first-choice centre-back pairing and will be tasked with containing Cristiano Ronaldo in the most high-profile game of Group K.

He is one of the best defenders Colombia have produced in a generation.

Jefferson Lerma is the combative defensive midfielder who does the unglamorous work that allows James Rodríguez and Ríos to play their best football.

The Crystal Palace man has 65 caps and 5 international goals and has been one of the most reliable performers in the Premier League across multiple seasons.

He wins the ball, protects the defence, and brings the defensive discipline that Lorenzo’s compact 4-2-3-1 demands.

He is one of the most consistent defensive midfielders Colombia have and one of the unsung heroes of this squad.

    7. Daniel Muñoz — Defender

With 46 caps and 3 international goals, he is an attack-minded, energetic right-back whose overlapping runs and crossing quality give Colombia real width on the right side.

He gives Díaz the freedom to express himself on the left by providing a reliable and dynamic outlet on the opposite flank.

He is one of the best full-backs in the Premier League right now.

    8. Juan Fernando Quintero — Midfielder

    Position: Attacking Midfielder

Juan Fernando Quintero is one of the most technically gifted players in Colombian football and the creative wildcard that Lorenzo can deploy to unlock defences when the game demands something different.

The River Plate midfielder scored one of the great goals in Copa Libertadores history, his free-kick in the 2018 final, and brings a level of skill, vision, and football intelligence that makes him one of the most exciting players to watch in this squad.

With 49 caps and 6 international goals, he is a genuine difference-maker when given the opportunity.

He is one of the most technically gifted visionary players in this tournament.

    9. Jhon Arias — Midfielder/Forward

Jhon Arias is one of the most consistent attacking players in this Colombia squad and a player who has been developing rapidly in the Brazilian Serie A with Palmeiras.

With 38 caps and 6 international goals, he brings energy, directness, and goal threat from wide positions and is one of the players Lorenzo relies on most for consistent output from the flanks.

He is quick, technical, and capable of producing moments of quality in tight spaces.

He is one of the best young wingers in South American football.

    10. Cucho Hernández — Forward

    Position: Striker/Forward
Age: 27 | Club: Real Betis (Spain)

Cucho Hernández is one of the most physically explosive and exciting strikers in this Colombia squad and a player whose move to Real Betis in La Liga has given him the perfect platform to showcase his ability at the highest European level.

He is strong, direct, and dangerous in the air — a completely different physical threat from the more technical Díaz and James-driven system.

With 9 caps and 2 international goals, his international record is still developing but his La Liga form and unique athletic profile make him one of the most dangerous options Lorenzo can call on.

He is one of the best young strikers in South American football heading into their prime.

    Conclusion

Colombia arrive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the most dangerous sides outside the top tier of contenders.

They beat Argentina and Brazil in qualifying.

They reached the Copa América final and lost only in extra time.

Díaz is in the form of his career, James is chasing a final moment of magic, and Lorenzo has built a team with real belief and identity.

Group K with Portugal is their biggest test.

Beat the odds there, and Colombia are capable of going very deep.

Other players worth watching include Yerry Mina, Jhon Lucumí, Jorge Carrascal, and Luis Suárez.
