Who is Miguel Almiron? Meet Newcastle’s Record Signing

Miguel Almiron is the latest MLS star to join the English Premier League. The Paraguayan midfielder transferred to Newcastle for a reported fee of £20 million. The fee was the highest Newcastle has ever paid for any player, a club record and it was also the highest fee paid for an MLS player. He recently made his Premier League debut, as a substitute against Wolves.

Here are some interesting things to know about Miguel Almiron.

Miguel Angel Almiron Regala was born 10 February 1994 at Asuncion Paraguay. He plays midfielder for Newcastle United and his country Paraguay. He wears the number 24.

1. He began playing football at his hometown.

At the age of 14 in his hometown, Cerro Porteno and even won the championship. He featured 39 times over 3 years for the club before going to Lanus in the Argentine Primera Division. He played as an advanced central midfielder and scored amazing goals against Banfield in the Clasico del sure and San Lorenzo in the final.

2. Miguel idolizes a goalkeeper.

When Miguel was asked who his football idol was growing up, he said: “in Paraguay, we had a few different idols, but I always liked Chilavert.” Jose Luis Chilavert was a goalkeeper at Paraguay. He was one of the most talented goalkeepers of his time. Chilavert often played free kicks and penalties. Consequently, he became the second highest scoring goalkeeper of all time.

3. He puts his team first.

Miguel’s teammates all have nice things to say about him, and he is especially close to Josef Martinez. He said, “I get along really well with Josef, so sometimes he and I go out for lunch, or I’ll invite him over to my house to play PlayStation.”

 

4. Perfect counter-attacking skills

Almiron plays attacking midfielder and has a good pace. The Paraguayan can turn defense into attack instantly. Tata Martino, his manager, and his coaching staff advised Almiron to take more shots. He is remarkably good with his left foot.

 

5. His time at Atlanta United

Miguel admits he didn’t know much about Atlanta before moving there. But his manager helped him see the benefits and Atlanta has started to grow on him. Miguel Almiron proved himself to be a star in his first MLS season with Atlanta united. He scored nine goals and had 13 assists, and this has earned him the No.1 spot on MLSsoccer.com’s annual 24 under 24 lists. At the end of his first season, he was named to the league’s Best XI and awarded as the Newcomer of the Year.

Almiron made his international debut for the Paraguayan national team in September 2015 and had participated in the Copa América Centenario and 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying phase.

On 31 January 2019, Almiron joined Newcastle United on a five and half year deal. He looks ready to make an instant impact in the English Premier League.
