50+ Soccer Teams That Play In And Wear Black Jerseys

It’s not common to see football teams use black as a jersey colour when prosecuting matches. 

This shade is usually associated with referees and other match officials; however, a few football clubs have been known to also wear black as their official jersey colour. 

Several football clubs around the world have adopted black jerseys as part of their identity, either as
home, away, or alternate kits.

Today we will be putting a spotlight on these sides.  

1. Orlando Pirates 

The Buccaneers are one of the oldest and most widely followed club sides in South Africa. 

The 85-year-old club is based in Johannesburg, the Southern African country’s commercial nerve center.

The Pirates are also one of the most successful sides in the country, having won the league title 9 times.

They are the first South African club side to win a continental title on the African continent, having won the CAF Champions League in 1995.

The Sea Robbers are distinct for wearing black jerseys and are also involved in one of the world’s fiercest African soccer rivalries known as the Soweto derby with fellow South African side Kaizer Chief.

2. DC United 

DC. United are one of the most successful soccer clubs in America. 

The soccer club is based in Washington, DC and currently plays in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer, the top tier of the American soccer league system.

Some of the trophies that DC United have won are four MLS Cups, four Supporters Shields, three US Open Cups, and six Eastern Conference championships.

They have also clinched one CONCACAF Champions League title and one Copa Interamericana. 

DC United’s home kit is usually a black jersey with white and red accents. However, they are not the only soccer team that wears black in the MLS.

3. Los Angeles FC

Los Angeles Football Club, or LAFC, is another soccer team that plays in black home kits.

Themis American professional soccer club is based in Los Angeles and competes in the Major League Soccer (MLS).

The club was established in 2014, and their colors and logo were unveiled on January 7, 2016, as black and gold.

However, for years Los Angeles FC have frequently played in an all-black home kit.

4. Vasco da Gama

Vasco da Gama is a Brazilian football that is based in Rio de Janeiro, in the neighborhood of Vasco da Gama.

The football club was founded in 1915 and currently competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B, which is the second tier of the Brazilian football league system.

The Brazilian club is one of the few football teams that use black colour as their home kit.

The club’s kits are typically made up of black shirts with a white diagonal slash that contains a cross pattée, along with black shorts and black socks.

5. Casale Football Club

Another football team that plays in black are little-known Italian club ASD. Casale football club.

They were formerly known as A.S. Casale Calcio) are based in Casale Monferrato, Piedmont.

The club currently plays in Serie D, the fourth tier of the Italian football league system.

The club, who won the Serie A in the 1913/14 season, plays in an all-black home jersey.

In fact, the team’s nickname, nerostellati (“the starred-blacks”), is based on the team’s colours of black with a white star on the chest.

6. CF Montréal

This Canadian professional soccer club is based in Montréal, Québec, Canada, and currently plays in the Eastern Conference of the Major League Soccer (MLS).

Montréal had previously worn blue and black stripes. However, in 2021 they rebranded to different colors.

In their rebranding, the club unveiled a new badge and colors. The club’s new official colours were marketed as “Impact Black,” “Ice Gray,” and “Sacré Bleu.” Nonetheless, the football team usually plays in completely black kits.

7. Minnesota United FC

Minnesota United is an American soccer club that was established in 2015 and competes in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer. 

Although the football club initially played in gray, they changed their home kit colours to black. Now, Minnesota United FC plays in a primarily black home kit.

8. Houston Dynamo

The American Major League Soccer franchise also wears black as an alternative to their traditional orange kit.

The 16-year-old club found success in its early years, winning the MLS Cup back-to-back in 2006 and 2007.

Since then, they have been in a slump but will be hoping to get back to the glory days in the ongoing MLS campaign.

9. New Zealand 

The New Zealand national team is also one of the few teams in the world that wear black.

Even though they usually wear an all-white jersey in keeping with their famous nickname, they also wear all-black jerseys as an alternative. 

The New Zealand women’s national teams, also known as the Football Ferns, also wore the black jerseys in there opening match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which they co-hosted with Australia.

The Kiwis are the best football team in the Oceanic region.

10. Eintracht Frankfurt 

The 2021/22 Europa League winners are one of the football teams that play in an all-black away jersey. They are one of the football clubs with birds on their badges.

Eintracht Frankfurt are one of the oldest football clubs in Germany and currently competes in the German Bundesliga. 

Eintracht Frankfurt’s main home kit is made up of white and black colours, while the away kit is predominantly black.
