When you watch women’s football today, it is easy to focus on the players.

In African women’s football, you see Barbra Banda running at defenders for Zambia. You see Asisat Oshoala finding the back of the net. You see Chiamaka Nnadozie standing between the posts.

But before these players became stars at international clubs, they played for local clubs here in Africa.

This is where they first learned to control a football. Coaches gave them opportunities and domestic leagues helped them learn to compete.

In this article, Top Soccer Blog looks at the 10 best women’s football clubs in Africa that make the game worth watching.

Top 10 Best Women’s Football Clubs in Africa (2026)

    1. AS FAR (Morocco)

AS FAR is one of the biggest women’s football clubs in Africa today.

The women’s team made its debut in 2001 before joining Morocco’s top division in 2008, and the club then built a strong domestic record and became a regular force in African competitions.

AS FAR won the CAF Women’s Champions League in 2022 and then won it again in 2025 after beating ASEC Mimosas 2-1 in the final.

That second title made AS FAR only the second club after Mamelodi Sundowns to win the competition twice.

The club has also been an important part of Morocco’s women’s football system, with players such as Fatima Tagnaout, one of Africa’s best women’s soccer players, representing the club at the highest level.

AS FAR are the defending African champions in 2026.

    2. Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies (South Africa)

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have been a major force in South African women’s football for years.

The women’s team was formed in 2009, and in 2012 Jerry Tshabalala took charge before Sundowns won their first national title a year later.

Their biggest breakthrough came in 2021, when Sundowns won the first ever CAF Women’s Champions League, beating Hasaacas Ladies 2-0 in the final.

Two years later, they won the competition again, beating Sporting Club Casablanca 3-0.

In August 2026, Sundowns beat ZESCO Ndola Girls 2-1 to win the COSAFA regional qualifier and reach the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League, their third COSAFA title.

Such records make Sundowns one of the most successful women’s football clubs in Africa.

    3. TP Mazembe Women (DR Congo)

TP Mazembe’s women’s team is one of the newer names on this list, but their rise has been extraordinary.

The women’s side was founded on September 28, 2020, in Lubumbashi, and it took only four years for the club to reach the top of Africa.

Mazembe first played in the CAF Women’s Champions League in 2022 but went out in the group stage.

They returned in 2024 with a very different result, winning the tournament by beating hosts AS FAR 1-0 in the final, with Marlene Kasaj scoring from the penalty spot.

It was the first CAF Women’s Champions League title for a DR Congo club, and at the 2024 CAF Awards, TP Mazembe were crowned Women’s Club of the Year.

Mazembe is a good example of how quickly a new women’s team can grow when a major football institution decides to invest in it properly.

    4. ASEC Mimosas (Côte d’Ivoire)

ASEC Mimosas shows how quickly a new women’s team can grow when the right people are behind it.

The famous Ivorian club created its women’s section in late 2022 after a talent-detection exercise at Sol Béni, led by club president Roger Ouégnin.

The new team started in Division 2, moved into the top division in 2023, and then began making history on the continental stage.

In 2025, ASEC won the WAFU B qualifying tournament and reached the CAF Women’s Champions League for the first time, going all the way to the final before losing 2-1 to AS FAR.

That was a remarkable first continental campaign for a women’s side created only a few years earlier and proof of what established football institutions can achieve when they give women’s football proper support.

    5. FC Masar (Egypt)

FC Masar has one of the more unusual stories in African women’s football.

The club’s roots go back to Tutankhamun FC, and in 2021 Right to Dream, the football development organisation linked to Sir Mohamed Mansour, acquired the club and rebuilt the women’s project with a strong focus on professional football and youth development, showing that ownership can be part of building a career in women’s football.

FC Masar won the Egyptian league and cup in 2023/24 before making their CAF Women’s Champions League debut in 2024, becoming the first Egyptian team to reach the knockout stage and finishing third while beating defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in the group stage.

By 2025, FC Masar had reached the CAF competition for a second time, with CAF describing them as a rising force in Egyptian women’s football.

FC Masar shows what can happen when professional football and player development are built into the same structure.

    6. Hasaacas Ladies (Ghana)

Hasaacas Ladies were formed in 2003 within Ghana’s Sekondi Hasaacas football family and have become one of Ghana’s most prominent women’s football clubs.

They have won Ghana’s Women’s Premier League five times and reached the 2021 CAF Women’s Champions League final, finishing as runners-up.

In the 2025/26 season, they finished runners-up in the league before winning the Ghana Women’s FA Cup, beating Army Ladies on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Hasaacas Ladies are one of the clubs most responsible for the growth of women’s football in West Africa.

    7. UWC Ladies (South Africa)

Not every great women’s football club in Africa comes from a traditional professional football setup, and UWC Ladies are a perfect example of that.

The club represents the University of the Western Cape in Bellville, South Africa, competing in the SAFA Women’s League, the country’s top women’s football division.

The women’s team has built a strong record in university football, winning the Women’s Varsity Football title in 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Their biggest achievement came in 2024, when UWC Ladies entered the COSAFA Women’s Champions League qualifying tournament for the first time and went all the way to the final, beating Gaborone United 9-8 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to become the first university team ever to qualify for the CAF Women’s Champions League.

They then travelled to Morocco for the tournament, giving their players the chance to compete against some of the strongest women’s footballers in Africa.

    8. Edo Queens (Nigeria)

Edo Queens have quickly become one of the most important new names in Nigerian women’s football.

Based in Benin City, the club won the Nigerian championship in 2024 before entering the WAFU B qualifying tournament and going through the regional competition unbeaten to reach the CAF Women’s Champions League.

Their biggest result came at the 2024 continental finals, when Edo Queens faced defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns and won 2-1, with Emem Essien equalising in added time before Mary Mamudu scored the winner.

Edo Queens became only the third Nigerian club to reach the CAF Women’s Champions League after Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens, and their rapid rise has added another strong club to Nigeria’s already impressive women’s football structure.

    9. Rivers Angels (Nigeria)

    Rivers Angels

Rivers Angels bring something different to this list: history.

The Port Harcourt club was formed in 1986 and has become one of the strongest women’s teams Nigeria has ever produced, winning seven Nigerian league titles and eight National Cups across a sustained period of domestic dominance.

Rivers Angels has also been one of the most important pathways into the Super Falcons.

Asisat Oshoala, among the best female strikers in the world, played for Rivers Angels before moving to Barcelona Women and later Al-Hilal.

Chiamaka Nnadozie, the three-time CAF African Best Female Goalkeeper of the Year in 2023, 2024, and 2025, also came through Rivers Angels before joining WSL side Brighton.

Both players show the extraordinary quality that has passed through this club, and Rivers Angels have remained a cornerstone of Nigerian and African women’s football for four decades.

    10. Simba Queens (Tanzania)

Simba Queens have become one of the biggest forces in Tanzanian women’s football.

The team is the women’s side of Simba SC, one of Tanzania’s most famous football clubs, and over the years they have built a strong domestic record while also making their mark in East African and continental competitions.

Their biggest continental achievement came in 2022, when they won the CECAFA Women’s Champions League qualifying tournament and reached the CAF Women’s Champions League semi-finals before losing to Mamelodi Sundowns.

In the 2025/26 Tanzanian Women’s Premier League, Simba Queens finished top of the table with 57 points and were officially crowned champions.

In the 2026 CECAFA qualifiers, they beat Burundi’s Top Girls Academy 2-0 before losing 2-1 to Kenya Police Bullets and going out in the group stage.

    Conclusion

The women’s football clubs in Africa on this list have earned their place through trophies, consistency, history, and the ability to develop competitive teams.

These 10 best women’s football clubs represent different stages of women’s football in Africa, from long-established teams to newer projects already making a continental impact.

Together, they show that the strength of clubs will shape the future of African women’s football.

For that reason, these African women’s football clubs deserve attention, respect, and continued investment.
