10 Possible Future World Cup Hosts from 2030 to 2042

Future World Cup Hosts

Hosting the FIFA World Cup can be a prestigious feat for any country (or countries).

That is why so many countries have regularly competed in a bid to host the World Cup.

The FIFA World Cup hosting is usually rotated between continents.

This way, the host country is now chosen in a vote by FIFA’s Council (formerly Executive Committee).

The voting process is through an exhaustive ballot system, and the decision is currently made some years in advance of the tournament.

We already know that the 2022 World Cup will be in Qatar. But we do not know which countries will host the subsequent ones.

Today, we look at 10 countries that are likely to host the World Cup from 2030 to 2042.

Possible FIFA World Cup hosts in 2030

1. Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, and Chile

The World Cup began in 1930, and the year 2030 will mark 100 years of the World Cup — the Centennial World Cup. And what better place to mark that than where it all began, South America!

Uruguay and Argentina officially confirmed their desire to bid for the World Cup on July 29, 2017.

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez supported this by wearing commemorative shirts when Uruguay and Argentina met in Montevideo.

Recently, Paraguay and Chile joined Argentina and Uruguay to bid for the hosting rights.

2. Morocco

Morocco has already hosted some major sporting events such as the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco, the 2013 International Youth Games, and the 2019 African Games.

Since the FIFA World Cup is expanding its number of teams, it is possible that Morocco will host the competition with another nation.

There are two likely joint bids that Morocco could go with: one with Tunisia and Algeria, or with Spain and Portugal.

3. The United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland

England have always wanted to host the FIFA World Cup, considering the fact that they last hosted it in 1966, where they also won it.

After losing to Russia in 2018, England will be hoping to submit a potential bid for the 2030 World Cup.

The English FA are considering a joint bid with Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland.

That would mean that the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland could all submit a joint bid

4. Saudi Arabia and Italy

The Athletic reported that Saudi Arabia was looking for a European co-host for their 2030 FIFA World Cup tournament bid.

The report stated that the Saudis are considering Euro 2020 champions Italy as their potential hosting partners, especially now that FIFA prefers more than one country as the host.

The distance of over 2,200 miles between the two countries would seem like a challenge but might not be as big a problem as one might think.

5. Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Walter Mzembi, expressed that Zimbabwe will bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2034.

His plan is to have Harare named the host city, but matches will be played in other neighbouring countries such as Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa.

All these countries are close to each other so it’s possible to see them pull of a surprise bid and win the hosting rights.

6. Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam

Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand have all expressed interest in hosting the tournament in recent years.

On July 3, 2017, the acting secretary-general of The Indonesian FA (PSSI), Joko Driyono, confirmed that Indonesia will bid for the 2034 World Cup.

However, in October 2019, five ASEAN countries officially proposed to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

The five countries are Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Thailand is to lead the initiative.

However, given that the 2022 World Cup was hosted in an Asian country, Qatar, it might be difficult for them to claim the hosting rights 12 years later.

7. New Zealand and Australia

New Zealand and Australia have shown interest in bidding for the World Cup and bringing it to Oceania for the first time ever.

Currently, Australia are considering a joint bid with Zealand to co-host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

However, they would stand a strong chance of hosting the tournament in 2034.

8. Belgium and Netherlands

In 2013, Belgium and the Netherlands submitted a joint bid for the 2018 World Cup, which was later awarded to Russia.

It is very likely that they would submit another bid 20 years after losing out.

9. Ghana, Togo, and Nigeria

Only one African country has succeeded in hosting the World Cup — South Africa.

Ghana have shown an interest in hosting the World Cup in 2038.

Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, reported that plans were underway to improve sports in Ghana and bid to host the World Cup in 2038.

Ghana would not host the tournament alone, so it’s possible that they would submit a joint bid with West African neighbors, Togo and Nigeria.

Cameroon, who are hosts of the 2022 African Cup of Nations, could decide to join as co-hosts.

The three West African nations have a strong of hosting the World Cup in 2038.

Nonetheless, that can only be possible if another African country fails to host the World Cup before 2038.
