Frank Onyeka: Biography
Frank started his career playing for Nigerian amateur side FC Ebedei based in Ijebu-Ode, a town in southwest Nigeria. Through Ebedei’s contact and business relationship with Danish Superliga side, FC Midtjylland Onyeka would later join them in 2016. This followed in the footsteps of Super Eagles player Paul Onuachu who signed for the Ulvene straight from Ebedei.
The then 18-year-old spent some time playing in the youth team of Midtjylland before graduating to the first team in 2017. Frank made his debut for the top Danish side in a Danish Cup game played on the 20th of September, 2017 against Fodbold. Onyeka marked his appearance with a debut goal as Midtjylland thrashed their opponents 7-0. This would later lead to his inclusion in the first-team squad for the 2017-2018 Superliga season. Onyeka finally made his league debut on the 9th of February, 2018 against AC Horsens, and just like his first official match, he would again make a goal-scoring debut, netting one of the two goals, as the Ulvene ran out 2-0 victors.
Frank would go on to make 14 more league appearances scoring 3 more goals as he helped his club clinch the Superliga title for the 2017-2018 season. Onyeka further cemented his place in the starting Xl of the Danish Champions for the following season playing 21 matches and, again scoring 4 goals for the 2018-2019 season. Frank would also make his debut in the UEFA Champions League, playing against Kazakhstan club side Astana FC on July 24th, 2018 in the early qualifying rounds. Onyeka’s profile would continue to grow as he helped his side clinch another league title for the 2019-2020 season. The 23-year-old’s performances have progressively been impressive and have attracted potential suitors from other clubs, both in Denmark and overseas. In late June 2020, it was reported that newly promoted EPL club, Brentford have signed Frank Onyeka from sister club Midtjylland.
Onyeka earned his first international call up to the Nigeria national team, the Super Eagles for their international friendly matches against Algeria and Tunisia on the 22nd of September, 2020. Frank would later make his debut in a 1-0 loss against the Fennecs of Algeria played on the 9th of October, 2020.
