The move was forthcoming, Brazilian midfielder, Phillipe Coutinho completed a move from Liverpool to Barcelona, after months of speculation and rumors. The deal was an initial fee of £106 million, which should rise to £142 million.
The Brazilian signed a five-and-a-half year contract at Barca with a buyout clause of 400 million euros.
Without a doubt, Coutinho had always wanted a move to the Nou Camp. However, many people will frown at the timing of the move. Now, that he is a Barca player, where will Phillipe Coutinho fit in Barcelona’s XI?
In today’s article, we will look at the possible positions where the Brazilian could play for Barcelona.
1. BARCELONA’S CURRENT 4-4-2 FORMATION
For large part of the La Liga, FC Barcelona has used the 4-4-2 formation. This formation has seen, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez play upfront. While Paulinho, Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, and Iniesta make up the midfield. This formation was used following the injury to Ousmane Dembele. Which role will Coutinho fit in this 4-4-2 formation? He could play in the left side of the midfield, and replace Iniesta, or on the right side and replace Paulinho.
2. BARCELONA’S FORMER 4-3-3 FORMATION
If Barcelona decide to return to their known 4-3-3 formation, Coutinho could play two possible positions. If Ousmane Dembele, returns to the XI, Coutinho could start on the left side of the midfield, with Messi, Suarez and Dembele playing higher up the pitch. He will enjoy a free movement their to try long range shots, and create chances.
On the other hand, the could start on the right wing and hence, compete with Dembele for a position their.
3. A BRAND NEW 4-2-3-1 FORMATION
I am very sure that so many Barcelona fans would love, to see all their attack minded players that they bought in one line up. This is possible if Barcelona try a new 4-2-3-1 formation. This formation would see Coutinho on the left, Dembele on the right, and Messi as a number ten just behind Suarez. This formation will form a devastating attack that could terrorize any defence.
4. A SURPRISE 3-4-3 FORMATION
last year when Barca overcame PSG in a historic comeback, former coach Luis Enrique, opted for a surprise 3-4-3 formation. If Ernesto Valverde is to go for that formation, how will the XI look like and above all, where will Coutinho fit in it? A 3-4-3 formation current in Barcelona’s current squad would see a back three of Yerry Mina/Mascherano, Pique, Umtiti. A diamond midfield with Sergio Busquests as the anchorman, Rakitic on the right side of the midfield, Jordi Alba or Paulinho on the right and Lione Messi playing higher up in the midfield, just behind the front three. The attacking trio in this 3-4-3 formation would see, Coutinho on the left-wing, Dembele on the right and Suarez in the middle.
Although it is still too early to tell, but Coutinho looks poised for a great season with Barca.
