The American Major League Soccer (MLS) is the premier football league competition in the United States. Since its inception in 1996, the league has witnessed and attracted great footballers from all over the world be it South America, Europe, or Africa to mention a few. The MLS has further been blessed to observe the skills and great performances of these aforementioned players. Today we take a look at some of the greatest players to have graced the MLS.

1. Landon Donovan
Mr. MLS himself has been a mainstay in the league since his debut in 2001 with the San Jose Earthquakes. The former American international made over 335 appearances in the league playing for the Earthquake and LA Galaxy. Landon Donovan is also the all-time assist leader in the MLS with 136 assists to his name.
Donovan achieved much success with both teams winning the MLS Cup 6 times, the most by any player twice in San Jose and the rest with Galaxy. Individually Landon has been named the MLS MVP once (2009) and also been named into 13 all-star teams a few amongst his many recognitions. The MLS Most Valuable Player award was renamed the Landon Donovan MVP award in his honor.
2. Robbie Keane
The former Ireland international has been one of the MLS’s greatest exports. When he joined franchise side LA Galaxy at the age of 31 many thought he was just playing out his last football days, but the Irish man showed he was still an A-class predatory striker. In 6 seasons with the Galaxy, Keane scored 83 goals in 125 appearances. In the process, he won the MLS Cup thrice. Individually he was also named into the All-Star team and MLS MVP in 2015, 2014 respectively.
3. Chris Wondolowski
The San Jose Earthquakes striker is the all-time highest goal scorer in the history of the MLS, having bagged an amazing 168 goals in 358 appearances and counting. The former USA international was also named the MLS MVP in 2012. He has won the MLS Cup on two occasions with Houston Dynamo in 2006 and 2007.
4. Carlos Valderrama
The Colombian legends was one of the first prominent players involved in the league at its beginnings in 1996. Valderrama played for the Tampa Bay Mutiny, and in his first season, he won the inaugural MLS MVP for that campaign after scoring 4 goals and providing 17 assists. Carlos was named into the MLS all-time best XI.
5. David Beckham
This list won’t be complete without the inclusion of one of the MLS’s most famous signings of all time. The former England international brought a lot of celebrity star power when he joined the LA Galaxy in 2007. His football skills weren’t too shabby as well as, his goals and assists netted him two MLS Cup trophies.
