South Korea are the only Asian nation ever to reach the semi-finals of a FIFA World Cup, achieving that feat on home soil in 2002.

That golden generation produced legends like Park Ji-sung, Ahn Jung-hwan, and Lee Young-pyo, and the question every four years is whether a new generation can come close to matching it.

At the 2026 World Cup in North America, South Korea qualified unbeaten from their Asian qualifying group, finishing top of Group B with 22 points from 10 games.

Coach Hong Myung-bo has a squad packed with European-based talent, and for the first time in years, there is genuine optimism that this group can reach the knockout rounds and maybe go further.

South Korea are in Group A alongside Mexico, Czech Republic, and South Africa, and they open on June 25 in Monterrey.

Here are the 10 best soccer players in South Korea at the 2026 World Cup.

    1. Son Heung-min — Forward (Captain)

Age: 33 | Club: Los Angeles FC (USA)

The greatest South Korean footballer of all time and one of the most beloved players in the world.

Son spent a decade at Tottenham Hotspur before making the move to Los Angeles FC in 2025, where he immediately became the biggest name in MLS history.

He won the Europa League with Spurs in May 2025 before heading to California, and in his brief first MLS stint he recorded 12 goals and four assists in just 13 games at a rate second only to Lionel Messi in the league.

He is one of the greatest Asian players in World Cup history with 56 international goals from 144 caps.

This is his fourth World Cup and almost certainly his last.

South Korea’s entire tournament revolves around him.

    2. Kim Min-jae — Defender

One of the best centre-backs in world football and the undisputed leader of South Korea’s defensive line.

Kim Min-jae has been a revelation at Bayern Munich since joining from Napoli, where he was instrumental in their Serie A title-winning season.

He is fast, dominant in the air, and commanding with the ball at his feet — qualities that are rare to find all in one defender.

At 29 he is at the absolute peak of his powers, and his ability to organise and marshal the backline will be crucial if South Korea want to progress beyond the group stage.

    3. Lee Kang-in — Midfielder

    Age: 25 | Club: Paris Saint-Germain (France)

South Korean football’s most exciting creative player and the winner of the KFA Male Player of the Year award for 2025.

Lee Kang-in has developed into one of the best playmakers in French football at PSG, where he was part of the squad that won the Champions League in the 2024/25 season alongside other domestic trophies.

He scored and assisted regularly throughout South Korea’s qualifying campaign and has 11 international goals from 47 caps — a remarkable return for a central midfielder.

At just 25, this is a player still rising to his ceiling, and the 2026 World Cup could be the moment he establishes himself as one of the best midfielders in Asia.

    4. Hwang Hee-chan — Forward

One of the most productive forwards in South Korea’s recent history and a regular scorer in the Premier League.

Hwang Hee-chan announced himself on the global stage at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, scoring the dramatic late winner against Portugal that sent South Korea through to the knockout rounds.

He has 17 international goals from 79 caps, making him one of the most clinical finishers the country has produced in years.

His pace, movement, and ability to finish with both feet make him a constant threat, and he is the ideal partner for Son Heung-min in attack.

    5. Lee Jae-sung — Midfielder

One of South Korea’s most experienced and reliable midfielders, with 105 caps and 15 international goals to his name.

Lee Jae-sung has been a consistent performer in the Bundesliga with Mainz 05 and brings a level of intelligence, work rate, and technical quality that makes him one of the most complete central midfielders in the squad.

He scored in the World Cup qualifying win over Iraq that sealed South Korea’s place in North America.

At 33, this is likely to be his final World Cup, and he will be determined to leave a lasting impression.

Age: 29 | Club: Feyenoord (Netherlands)

A composed and technically gifted central midfielder who has been one of South Korea’s most consistent performers in recent years.

Hwang In-beom plays his club football at Feyenoord in the Eredivisie, where he has developed into one of the best Asian midfielders in European football.

He reads the game exceptionally well, distributes crisply, and provides the defensive cover that allows Lee Kang-in and Lee Jae-sung to play with more freedom.

With 73 caps and 6 international goals, he is one of the most experienced players in the squad.

    7. Cho Gue-sung — Forward

Age: 28 | Club: Midtjylland (Denmark)

The most talked-about South Korean striker at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where his back-to-back headers against Ghana made him an overnight sensation.

Cho Gue-sung has continued to develop as a forward, scoring regularly for Midtjylland in Denmark and contributing goals for the national team.

He has 12 international goals from 44 caps, which is an impressive record for a player still building his reputation at the highest level.

His physicality, aerial ability, and intelligent movement make him a very different option from Hwang Hee-chan and Son Heung-min.

    8. Oh Hyeon-gyu — Forward

Age: 25 | Club: Besiktas (Turkey)

One of the most improved South Korean forwards in recent years and a player who has taken his international career to a new level.

Oh Hyeon-gyu scored in the crucial World Cup qualifying win over Iraq and has 6 goals from 27 caps.

The Besiktas striker is sharp inside the box, comfortable with both feet, and brings a creative edge that complements the more physical options in attack.

At 25, he is developing rapidly, and a strong World Cup performance could open the door to a move to one of Europe’s bigger leagues.

    9. Kim Seung-gyu — Goalkeeper

Age: 35 | Club: FC Tokyo (Japan)

A vastly experienced goalkeeper who has been one of South Korea’s most dependable servants between the sticks for over a decade.

Kim Seung-gyu has 87 caps and brings a calm, commanding presence to the South Korea goal that the entire defensive unit feeds off.

He plays his club football at FC Tokyo in Japan’s top division and remains fit and sharp at 35.

His experience at three previous World Cups — 2014, 2018, and 2022 — means he has seen everything the tournament can throw at a goalkeeper.

In a squad with genuine ambitions of making the knockout rounds for the first time since 2010, that experience is invaluable.

    10. Bae Jun-ho — Midfielder

Bae Jun-ho plays his club football at Stoke City in the Championship and has forced his way into the senior national team setup with a series of impressive performances.

He is technically gifted, brave on the ball in tight spaces, and possesses the kind of creative instinct that South Korean football rarely produces in someone so young.

At 22 and heading to his first World Cup, Bae Jun-ho has the world at his feet.

He could be the breakout star of South Korea’s campaign and one of the most interesting players to watch in Group A.

    Conclusion

South Korea go into the 2026 World Cup with one of the most talented squads they have assembled in years.

With Son Heung-min in the autumn of his international career and a new generation led by Lee Kang-in and Bae Jun-ho rising up behind him, this could be the perfect tournament for a genuine statement.
