South Korea is the first and only Asian team to make the FIFA World Cup semi-finals, and they went as far as finishing third in 2002 at the World Cup jointly hosted with Japan.
However, that team had some legendary footballers in South Korean history, so to replicate such a feat at this year’s FIFA World Cup is going to be a monumental task.
Nonetheless, there are many top footballers in South Korea who play for some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

1. Son Heung-min
When Park Ji-sung was in the Premier League with Manchester United many years back, a lot felt it would take longer before another Asian player talked less about a South Korean prayer will do wonders in the Premier League.
However, here is Son Heung-min, who is not just in the top five South Korean players of 2022 but definitely in the top five of the best-ever footballers in South Korean history.
Beyond his form, his quality is there for all to see, and he remains the most important player in the South Korean team.
He was part of the 2018 World Cup squad that secured a famous victory over Germany, where he scored.
Heung-min Son is one of the greatest Asian players in the World Cup.

2. Kim Min-Jae
Kim Min-Jae is one strong and speedy defender that does well with the ball at his feet. The 25-year-old’s speedy rise from Chinese football to mainstream Europe has been phenomenal.
His first stop was at Fenerbache in 2021, and after just over 30 games and a season, Napoli were impressed enough to splash the cash.

3. Lee Kang-in
South Korea finished as runners-up in the 2019 FIFA under-20 World Cup hosted by Poland, and from that team, Lee Kang-in has been one of the shining lights to have made a steady progression to the national team.
He was highly rated as a teenager, and was one the top young Asian football talents.
Lee was already with Valencia and won the Copa Del Rey in 2019 while also winning the AFC Youth Player of the year and the FIFA U20 World Cup Golden Boy the same year.

4. Hwang Hee-chan
Here is a player who plays for Wolverhampton in the Premier League after impressing first at RB Salzburg and then at Leipzig.
The forward is yet to hit the ground running in the Premier League, especially after a slow start by Wolves, but his quality isn’t in doubt.
Last season he scored 10 goals in 30 appearances for Wolves while on loan, and that helped him secure a permanent deal.
He’s been part of the South Korean national team since 2016, making 49 appearances and scoring nine goals in total.
5. Hwang Ui-jo
Hwang Ui-jo is a striker who plays Greek club Olympiacos, on loan from Premier League side Nottingham Forest.
He is a tall, physical and clinical center-forward.
Ever since he made his debut for South Korea, he has been a key player for them. In the 2018 Asian Games, Ui-jo scored nine goals in seven matches, which greatly contributed to South Korea’s gold medal.
The 30-year-old has scored 19 goals in his 49 caps for South Korea.
